I ordered the AP to a quick connection of wireless clients
per Virtual LAN (VLAN) and RADIUS server to allow authentication.
I wanted to avoid the setting up of an external RADIUS Server elegant.
The web interface is available in English, kept clear and simple.
Important: Only a firmware update ermoeglichte configuring me
the required features.
Here was on the German side of the manufacturer only an older version,
on the "edimax.eu" page has a newer firmware.
The telephone contact with the hotline was exemplary and informative.
One of the few who admit not "everything" to know and but around
care of the problem.
First of what does not work complete:
--------------------------------------------------
- Firmware Update required
- "Built" Radius server only works without certificates or
MAC address reservation.
(What probably makes only by user name or IP with DHCP little sense.)
- Radius Server comes with only 1 SSID, NOT with ESSID (MultiSSID)
(Also available in the manual, but nobody reads as accurate before buying)
- Max.4 Vlan, said 1.Vlan untagged is connected to the switch
the remaining 3 tagged if desired.
- MAC filter works only on the 1.Vlan, the remaining non!
- No log function for data evaluation (possibly troubleshooting)
Now the positive properties:
-----------------------------------
- Coverage is good, even excellent with better antennas.
Will reflect changes to the programming, this can be taken over WITHOUT -
to restart the device and thus only made any changes
and then reboot. Locate I solved personally managed.
- Good and achievable Hotline without expensive fees.
- Very good price / performance ratio
- Does what it should
We WLAN clients are active AP potter at the moment up to 10.
(Notebook, TV with WiFi, Squeezebox, smartphone with / without Android, iPad)
The AP is connected to a manageable Gigabit switch.
The VLANs are separated by firewall.
-------------------------------------------------- ---------------------
-------------------------------------------------- ---------------------
Our constellation:
-> DSL modem
-> Gigabit Router (Mikrotik RB750GL) !!! Hammer part !!!
-> Gigabit Switch Netgear GS716T (very good price / performance ratio)
-> AP Edimax EW-7416APn (very good price / performance ratio)
The configuration options are gigantic.
The configuration effort is high, compared with an "all-in-one" solution.
Profound knowledge is recommended; o)
HD TV stream simultaneously possible with several instances.
Total cost about 230 Euro
Addendum:
After updating to a newer firmware MAC filtering works
now also on all VLANs. (January 2013)
The device is very stable and in the 9 months use, he has only 1 time "hung".
Only a log file I miss sometimes ...
