When I bought this book I though it was just another "a serious crime happend in the past and is linked to a brutal murder in the present" -scenario That would be Easily read, kind of shallow, entertaining, and Quickly forgotten. I could not be more wrong ... "In the Woods" contains suspense Far Beyond the obvious "whodunnit", and to astonishing intensity. Its first person perspective (a man's view, written by a woman, a fact I consider quite interesting) conveys a very sharp and traceable image of the main characters. I even dare to say That the actual murder case is somewhat pushed to the background to leave more space for the interplay among the characters.
Maybe the title is a little exaggerated. HOWEVER, I'm sure everyone who loves Twin Peaks will devour this book in a few days time. It contains Basically the same ingredients: a brutal murder in a small backward town, a marvelous development of its main characters who all seem to have minor or major issues, and a cynical sense of humor. Even though I would not call "in the woods" funny at all! Only the link towards mystery is much less distint in the woods.
All in all a definite 5 stars, for I can not remember when a book kept me awake last till early morning, leaving me shaking with suspense!
