My impressions of the Fujifilm X-E2
-----
I shoot for about 10 years in addition to the first digital analog pictures with a small Canon IXUS. Later, with the 40D, so a relatively large and heavy digital Canon DSLR. With this camera I had my one zoom lens, an excellent 17-55mm lens with a continuous aperture of 1: 2.8. There are also other fixed focal length, a 200 with 1: 2.8 and a 100 Macro 1: 2.8. The large Canon 40D fulfilled for image quality, speed and reliability (including autofocus) all my wishes. Unfortunately, it is precisely with the zoom lens with approximately 1,700 grams too heavy and very visually striking for the scene. I have already some great pictures lost because the camera is so striking.
Before the digital age, I had several small Rollei, Leica M4 with a 50mm lens, sometimes a (natural analogue) Contax G1 and a LEICA M6. Long time ago. I no longer take pictures of analog.
-----
Trying to bridge the gap between the IXUS cameras and the big SLR and find a panacea, resulted in the acquisition of Fuji X20. This fulfilled many expectations and has been used on several holidays and in everyday life. The X20 is compared to their good optical performance small and light. However, it leaves the autofocus and image quality in low light open still something to be desired. I refer to my Renz Sion the X20.
-----
I will not here much of the previous reviews for X-E2 repeat why I limit in my review the issue one, with the I approach the X-E2: Seeking a camera that makes it at the points better where the X20 small weaknesses. Not to the X20 no longer use. They are simply too good and above all nice and light. Namely lighter than the X-E2 with one or two interchangeable lenses. But the search is completed. I am very pleased with the X-E2.
-----
For the intended use: I shoot less "technical" than that I try to capture emotions or short stories or to transport. A technically not quite perfect picture may have a right to exist if it has something to offer elsewhere. All the better if a good motive was also captured technically clean.
-----
I would like to pre-send the evaluation of technical skills: The image quality is incredibly good. In brightness, in low light, with static subjects, with moving subjects (street photography or crawling and running toddler). I've gotten used to not have a camera as soon as the X-E2. Operation, feel, appearance and image results are just exactly as I imagine it. But Here I would note that I had a certain imprint in terms of aesthetics and Fuji-operating logic by half a year of experience with the Fuji X20.
-----
For context: I have tested the camera using RAW + Fine. As a first objective was only 50 available, so the Fujinon XF 35mm F1.4 R lens. Because the lens has positively impressed me, I'll probably still to lose elsewhere a few words. Later, "the 28 Fujifilm Fujinon XF 18mm F2 lens R and, more recently," the 21s "Fujifilm Fujinon XF 14mm F2.8 R lens.

Autofocus in low light
The X-E2 now has in addition to the contrast autofocus and phase detection AF. This has obviously been an improvement since the AF of the predecessor X-E1 was indeed repeatedly criticized and no complaint would be understandable in the X-E2. The autofocus of the X-E2 is my feeling as it should be. He's not quite as quickly and safely as in a modern DSLR like the 40D when using a high-high-aperture objective. Sometimes the X-E2 in subjects with low contrast can not find AF point. And when it gets dark, it switches to contrast AF and is slower. But: This AF I can live. And I have the power option is not selected. This is a function in which the camera is a little faster and to consume significantly more power. Does not need one ...
Nett is the focus peaking function in Fuji called Highlight, if you focus manually. For this purpose in a supplement more.
-----
Image quality in low light
The contrast range is surprisingly large and better than my little extent in the tooths Canon 40D. In some test shots I had feared that the lights would be been up or in the shadows no more drawing. But it has then even on the JPG (out of the camera) more than enough. (Setting the Konstrastumfangs: Auto)
It's amazing that even at 6,400 ASA in screen view 100% Low noise performance can be seen. Experience with prints on A4 or larger, I have not. My experience shows that deductions can be no great wish unfulfilled when when viewed on the display at 100% no noise or other interference image can be seen. As the expressions look then, I'll try and it can tell if you are interested here. I ask for appropriate comments.

the electronic viewfinder
A system camera without a viewfinder is not an option for me. Therefore, I have very spy closely whether the electronic viewfinder of the X-E2 like it. Not least because the viewfinder has been criticized in the X-E1. In fact, the viewfinder image is now smooth, bright enough even in backlight and very sharp. I do not miss an optical viewfinder and appreciate the advantages of an electronic viewfinder.
-----
Other strengths
I find it very pleasant, manual aperture and shutter speed via the rotary ring on the lens or be able to make the adjustment wheel. I'll explain in a supplement in greater detail below.
Practically, the setting T, if, like me likes to work even with a tripod and long exposure on landscape photography. You can set up to 30 sec..
The exposure compensation function is often used by me in the automatic mode. Therefore, I appreciate that the wheel touches well, a fixed grid and has unlike the X20 now also dissolves in third steps.
-----
RAW
You can develop images from the camera itself in the X-E2 RAW. The settings are varied. As the comparison with the Fuji RAW looks converter or other converters, I'll find out.
I had initially found for this possibility no real application. The argument that one can create Cartoons with a portable printer that can be for weddings sometimes nice does not take so much. Because: When do you do that? But then I realized that it's nice for a development of RAW over the WiFi connection (small) JPG send images to your smartphone and to be able to email from there.
-----
Weaknesses?
The X-E2 has hardly any weaknesses. The only weakness is the fact that it has no optical viewfinder. But if you want to, then you have to stop buying the X-Pro1, or their successors or be limited to the 23mm lens the X-100s.
The distance to the more expensive by a multiple digital Leica is negligible. The ease of use and the technical sophistication of Fuji X-E2 are so much better than any digital Leica's I've ever had in your hand. Looking at the tests, the low light capabilities of Leica are significantly worse than that of X-E2.

In addition to the duty the freestyle
One particularly nice side aspect is the possibility of using a system camera also my old Canon FD lenses (before there were excellent EOS lenses without autofocus !!). So I use with great pleasure a very good 85mm lens with 1: 1.2 again. I will report about in well in a supplement. What interests me in particular, whether the Focus Peaking (highlight) also works with third-party lenses. Especially nice: you're still offered great lenses, which only the AF missing the only weakness in the bay or at photo dealers at low prices. Pays particular attention to the old Minolta MD lenses. I'm looking forward to it shopping.

Demarcation for X-M1 and the X-Pro1
The X-M1 has the sensor of the X-E1. That is, it has only Contrast AF and Phase Detection AF no. It is too slow. And it has no viewfinder. This means that the X-M1 does not come (for me) is not in question.
As for the sensor, same applies to the X-Pro1.
Waiting for the X-Pro2 is not necessary for me, because I do not need the optical viewfinder. The digital viewfinder of the X-E2 is not only perfectly adequate for me, but really good.
-----
My conclusion:
As soon as I've bought the 60 macro and so am happy, I am the Canon 40D sell. And with it, the L-fixed focal lengths and the excellent zoom lens 17-55 with 1: 2.8.
-----
Conclusion: as if I had always had been. I look forward to the experience with the next objectives and am as safe as never before, that I will last a lifetime for my kind of photography with this camera to me.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++
Addendum 1: From my review of the "50s" Obektivs I want to bring a cut here. So manual focusing was a totally surprising discovery for me. Thanks to the "Focus Peaking" function - at Fuji called highlight - makes it an amazing fun, especially in low light conditions to "M" to questions and to ask to see the camera precisely, was on site which just asked sharply. It is simply amazing how when you look through the viewfinder of the field of "glittering" range of depth of field to the front or rear travels. Through focus manually or pre-focusing any shutter lag is eliminated. If you quietly and unobtrusively for example with the camera follows a conversation, you are no longer distracted trying to set the focus point on the right place and is better able to focus on to catch the right moment. The often annoying refocusing for the next picture is eliminated. It is immediately ready to fire. For this type of photography, "the 50" is ideal.
It is nice that the AF-L button (previous) allowed focusing in "M" mode. Then the e-E2 is usually very close to it. Then you can - supported by highlight - additional taxes and is ready to fire without re-look for in a margin the focus point.
-----
Update 2: I also want to draw attention to the still inadequate getting on in previous reviews to advantage function "what-you-see-is-what-you-get". If you look in the manual mode's screen or in the viewfinder, you can see exactly how the exposure of the image will look like later. This leads me to the fact that I often take photographs manually, about to free up at maximum aperture, or to ensure a short time with moving subjects. Especially in a tight light (candle, shadow, indoor with distant light sources), the aperture is open and set a 30th of and then tested at 1600 ASA for example, what the searcher reproduces. Then either grateful switched another timer faster - or - if you can bear and the subject is moving slightly - but the aperture closed half or whole step. Is it a little dark, you know that you can get out of the RAW definitely still a visor. This is all just great!
-----
Another addendum: I noticed that the flash is disabled when the "sleep mode" is activated. Until I noticed that, however, I've wanted a wolf and went in the meantime by a defect of .... ;-)
-----
And one more addendum to the viewfinder: I now have about 600 photos taken within two weeks. The conditions were very different. I wrote above that a disadvantage could be that there is no optical viewfinder. I correct the hereby. The optical viewfinder - I know from his principle of my Leica and of course from the X-20 - is in my view unnecessary. The viewfinder of the X-E2 is fast, authentic, reliable and ideally suited for light and dark motives and environments. I miss the excellent viewfinder of a Leica M6 NOT. On The Contrary. In low light conditions, for the X-E2 is particularly well suited to the electronic viewfinder is the Leica rangefinder cameras clearly superior. Since me one way or another negative remark might have unsettled in other reviews as potential buyer, I would like to address this. At least in my humble opinion is the viewfinder an absolute highlight, not a weakness that should deter one from buying.
-----
Addendum for the purposes of Resumes and after a few weeks of experience and almost 1500 trips: a camera to take pictures. All glory and splendor (or resolution and Iso-skills etc) will not help if the camera is not good in my hand and taking pictures does not expire intuitive. A motive that I can not take, because the camera does not play fast enough, possibly irretrievably gone. Whether this catchiness is given between photographer and videographer, partly can not be objectified. When X-E2 This area is solved in my opinion wonderful. The Focus Peaking function and the direct control of the exposure in the viewfinder are further highlights that simply make it a. The fact that the camera also makes wonderful images - that's all the better.
-----
Addendum after seven months: By now I hardly use my Canon 40D. And I use almost exclusively Fuji "50", so the 35mm lens. And I shoot almost exclusively in manual exposure and focus. The Fuji-automatic I leave at Street Photography Only the white balance and the contrast ratio. In the studio and the white balance is set manually.
My way of photographing has changed completely. I am much more "in control". Keep from the outset deliberately light and peculiarities of the possible motives (fast moving or slow moving or stationary) in mind - decide whether I want to expose to the light or the dark areas.
Mostly I select the time and then will adjust the exposure with the aperture ring. I could select the aperture and adjust roughly using the wheel for the exposure time and fine-adjust with the small arrow buttons to the left and right the time in increments. I do not yet become a habit, roughly select the time and then with the aperture ring - einzujustieren exposure - after the highly reliable optical impression in the viewfinder. That works well pleasing in virtually all lighting conditions.
On "Fn" I have the image quality and are Scan - when it seems necessary - in "FINE + RAW". That's either very critical exposure situations the case - or if the white balance seems to me critical. Then "Develop" I in the camera In addition, the JPG and works great and self-explanatory.
Properly wonderful is the unobtrusiveness of the camera. Nobody takes wg. the inconspicuous impression seriously. And I need not explain well how good it is the pictures, if the motives are not observed or feel pressured.
I am a very big fan of the X-E2 and take pictures better than ever after my subjective impression. At least authentic ...
If I had one wish, I would like to see a slightly larger viewfinder. If the implementation of this desire would, however, make only with the additional weight of the X-T1, then I would do without it now. Because the viewfinder of the X-E2 is usually sufficient.
If one would give me a Leica, I would not want to have - or they sell immediately and buy me back the X-E2. The image quality - especially in low light - the functionality and price-performance ratio are superior.

Supplement the end of July 2014 so after almost eight months. Two themes:
- Photographing under studio conditions
I use a very simple studio equipment. Two energy-saving lamps that plug into two TecTake studio lights. Simple tripods. Behind a collapsible background. The results are consistently convincing. I'm working on with about ISO 400, 1/180 sec and aperture 4.0 and finished consistently Portraits. the lights are about 100 cm apart and radiate at a shallow angle to the people being photographed. It is important the manual white balance, which brings very uniform results. In automatic white balance, the results deviate too because the clothes clearly brings the measurement to be photographed people greatly confused.
- Films with the X-E2
I film only rarely. Therefore, in a nutshell: The pure image Result of encouraging high quality. The amount of data generated is unfortunately quite large. Per sec. Over 1 MB at the highest resolution. But what I want to emphasize is the consistently very decent sound quality, which I had not expected. There are especially a lot of action-cams - which were specially designed for films but - much worse.

Supplement the end of October 2014 (after nearly a year) and attempt of a conclusion
I use the X-E2 Most often, the 35mm f / 1.4. In addition, the 14mm f / 2.8 and the 18mm f / 2.0. In addition, I use some of Canon FD lenses (85mm f / 1.2 and f 100mmm / 2.0).
My favorite lens ("the '50s") is mechanically loaded. Also climate. Has already been through a lot. Unfortunately, even some not very gentle contacts frontally to the autofocus mechanism - what stop unfortunately sometimes happens. With more than 10,000 trips no wonder. Fortunately no permanent damage. The camera accompanies me often. The lens is my favorite lens. I'm a big fan of the low weight, the feel, the high optical quality, starting with sharpness and contrast, even at maximum aperture to color, distortion, nearly missing fringing, very low vignetting.
Only one requires more practice: Still I mainly in the fast portrait photographing "the Committee", ie situations where the focus is not properly seated. Especially with my little daughter (2 years), which sometimes does not keep silent halt. The setting, after when you turn the focus ring (for manual focusing) automatically starts a significant increase in the viewfinder is useful for static subjects. When moving you need accuracy and occasionally some intuition or sometimes luck. Unfortunately, I'm the focus sometimes but just a couple of centimeters too far forward or backward. But if the focus is seated (in people stop on the eye surface), amazed again and again the "Knack Focus". As another reviewer wrote: "punched out" from the bokeh. That hits pretty well. In light situations where you could recently only dream to make fairly reasonable pictures today you get top quality.
A friend with his Canon 7D I once showed what happens when you fully turning up the ISO setting and photographed with a 1/15 sec. At maximum aperture in a dark room. He was amazed at how well you could see the books usually on the opposite side of the room.
This one is with Fuji also easy go. The Leitz lens (SUMMILUX-M 1: 1.4 / 35mm ASPH) with the same focal length weighs 320 gr. The Fuji discussed here only 186 Gr. This is clear from a lot.
The corr. LEICA M weighs again significantly more than my X-E2. Also see my review of the Fujifilm 35mm f / 1.4.
The small size, however, leads to the fact that one can make a lot of pictures that you usually did not get because you're normal. It starts with the own child is intimidated when it feels directed to be a huge DSLR camera. This applies to the Street Photography. And even at family parties or similar occasions. People overlook the small retro camera "like.

Update on 18/12/2014: Rarely I was so curious about a firmware update. So should the development of software for the X-E2 from 2.1 to 3:40 (who counts as actually and how ??) come two interesting changes.
Firstly, the manual fine-tuning of the car Fokuses shortly AF + MF mode. In AF mode, the camera when pressing the shutter sharp - but then leaves the focus on holding down the shutter button halfway change manually. The zoom function remains - when times selected - activated. Comment in a Word? Toll !! I manually focusing a lot and so far the impractical AF-L button had to be pressed with the thumb, which is now much faster and without changing the knob. OK then. So much I can try in the given shortly.

The "film emulsion" Classic Chrome has disappointed me, however. I had expected at the notice that would be attempted, the grand Kodakchrome to simulate 25 or 50 and that only the name "Kodak" had to be avoided for names for legal reasons. But if such a simulation was intentional, it is not managed. The slightly dull and washed out looking colors and the slight increase in contrast of "Classic Chrome" not seem to me easy. I rather have the impression that not FILM emulsion was copied, but the slightly washed out and faded-looking impression older (and yellowed) Newspapers should be imitated. As was achieved a kind retro look. Sorry, that's not my taste. Kondakchrome had vibrant colors, wonderful reds and certainly not such a bleached Touch. Or is the fact that many Kodakchrome slides "aged" and are designed to look and today nobody knows how Kodakchrome looked?
Anyway: THE DA is no "Kodakchrome" emulsion. I have to I have to wait probably more ...

For the interval control and the advanced WLAN controller I have not found a use. But let's look at rest. Here soon more ...

By the way: Who believes that it runs better with the Sony A7 who likes the love to continue so represented. I asked myself and decided for me that the large sensor of Sony though would be nice to me but the image quality of Fuji Xen more than enough. When I then with the not exactly humble aspects such as the narrow lens program Sony (very good 35mm, a very good 55mm lens - and then ??) who carelessly made operating philosophy and the bad product management at Sony looked at was the issue of cleared me. Apart from the fact that although the camera small, the lenses but (for physical reasons) are much larger and heavier.
