Despite the intense Indian theme, the film has nothing to do with a Western. It's more of a tough, realistic and wonderfully emotional historical film from the kind of "Braveheart," "The Patriot", "Glory", "Gladiator", "King Arthur," "Troy", "Alexander", "Conan 1" where Most of these films were made only after "The Last of the Mohicans", and thus followed his example.
He was virtually the first major film, the historical events with the latest technology made vividly in intense and deeply moving way. A stroke of genius from Miami Vice creator Michael Mann, which in turn allows extremely reinforce feelings through music.
