a.) am abroad and need Internet!
b.) have 2 netbooks, 2 iPod Touch & BlackBerry!
b.) have a prepaid Internet / Data SIM with USB modem stick.
But how does a "iPod Touch" with a USB modem online ??
And how to avoid the hassle of modem switch between laptops when both want to surf at the same time?
I bought this device blind 3 months ago and am absolutely thrilled!
It is the "gadget" of 2010 !!
THE DEVICE:
It is sold under the name "TrekStor", but it is 100% owned by Huawei, a Chinese manufacturer. The HTML-based configuration software is also HUAWEI, was only matched by Trek goals and translated into German. There is even an iPod touch-optimized interface version.
The device is very small (like today's cell phones) and super light (cigarette box)! The battery provides for the fullest utilization for a period of min. 5 hours. (!!!). This means that there are 5 devices connected at the same time, are online and surfing! 5 WiFi devices simultaneously is also the maximum of what the device can handle. On the go more than enough!
OPERATION:
The device is really very easy to use:
a.) SIM card purely
b.) Press power button
c.) WLAN connect (default open)
d.) to go online!
The device has only 3 buttons:
1) Power (On / Off)
2.) Connect (direct dial-in online)
3.) WiFi / WPS encryption
The display gives a clear and simple overview of:
1) Network signal strength (in beams - just like the mobile phone)
2.) is selected provider
3.) Roaming warning
4) Number of WiFi guests on the router (precious !!)
5.) Battery (very detailed)
6) Web display, whether online or local LAN.
7) 3G / 2G display
Particularly noteworthy is the Connect button: Just like a phone call by pressing a button the router online email (takes 1-2 sec.) And later go after surfing again by pressing a button offline. This is very easy, saving traffic and precious online time while the devices stay all further connected via Wi-Fi.
The device provides full extent UMTS, HSPA that is in Down & Upload! Provided that the provider offers the necessary network infrastructure. With HSPA to surf now at least. 3-6 Mbits because I do not feel any difference to my normal DSL line at home more.
The display can be seen immediately, as soon as (m) has a device connected to the router via WiFi, and I can start with a simple browser interface to configure the router and adjust the security levels accordingly. Factory setting is a simple WEP encryption. But it is also WPA / WPA2, MAC filtering, firewall, port forwarding, broadcast hide, etc ... (see tech. Details).
The device generates its own small wireless network, leave the connect all my devices (iPhone, iPod, laptops, PS3, etc ...). So I always have my own LAN network with me and may even - without being online - exchange between my devices data or in small LAN gamble my games with other friends! The wireless range is for security reasons only max. 10 meters, but that's enough, too!
INTERNAL COUNTER:
Since one mobile often has limited traffic available (I use my prepaid data SIM have 2GB a month), I the internal data counter of the router is very contrary: Each session will be counted in the up- & downlink and an overview shows me how much I have available to end of the month. At the beginning of the new month I set the counter back and the router starts all over again.
Also very nice is the switch from (A) utomatic and (M) anueller configuration: In (A), the router recognizes all major providers and self-configures itself immediately on its own! I am, however, associated abroad with an unknown local provider, I had to do everything manually on (M). And even that was super simple 3 steps that I understood even I as a layman!
All in all, the perfect gadget of 2010 !!
For all iPod Touch / iPhone / Netbook friends who want to surf on the go. Light, small, very simple, user friendly, good battery life,
... And the best of all: It works at 100% (!!!)
