I'm not a fan of country music. Probably I also know too little of it and guess at Country of schmaltzy, saccharine and hypocritical Trucker songs. Also I know the complete works of Johnny Cash too little. But what the old man has created with this plate (as well as the other American Recordings by Rick Rubin), may simply be described as awesome. The secret lies in the reduction to the essentials. Voice, acoustic guitar and piano are the main ingredients. Sometimes it may even violin, harmonium and organ be. Johnny Cash's voice is dark and broken. One has the feeling that here everything is real. Besides their own songs to impress even the selection of the songs that others have written. Songs, among others, Tom Petty, Neil Diamond, U2 and Nick Cave makes cash on his own and sings and plays, as if they had been written specifically for him. Repeated listening one discovers gradually the intricacies of this only seemingly simple album - which also boasts an excellent sound quality. My out tip "Country Trash" - to pay attention to the text! I give this plate 6 of 5 stars!
