Nikon Coolpix S9500 Digital Camera (18 Megapixel, 22x opt. Zoom, 7.6 cm (3 inch) OLED screen, image stabilizer) (Electronics)

Customer Review

As I have already tested the Nikon Coolpix S9300 in detail, I want to point out the major differences once:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Zoom: 22x (S9500) -> 18x (S9300)
Resolution: 18 megapixels CMOS (S9500) -> 16 Megapixel CMOS (S9300)
Display: OLED monitor (7.5 cm, 641,000 pixels) with (S9500) -> LCD monitor (7.5 cm, 921,000 pixels)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Furthermore, the new S9500 scores with Wi-Fi connectivity. This allows you to transfer photos and videos wirelessly on tablets and smartphones. The remote control camera on the mobile device is possible, but requires the installation of the free app Nikon Wireless Mobile Adapter Utility.
While the body of the S9300 had a slightly rubberized surface, the S9500 is metallic satin finish.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Whether you really need the extended zoom range depends on the personal demands. Also, the 18x zoom of the S9300 already covers a far larger area than most D-SLR photographers available.
The increase from 16 to 18 megapixels in resolution should be considered critically. Because the lens does not manage to put these datasets in an adequate image quality. At 100% representation on the monitor then already significant artifacts are visible. My opinion: About 8 MP (4896 x 3672 pixels) produced in this camera class only garbage. But even with this setting have good-quality prints up to A4 are possible. More probably no one will expect from such a compact camera (can).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The most important - the image quality.
In a direct comparison of the technical data hardly worth mE the switch from the S9300 to the S9500. What has me but then very surprised is the fact that the S9500, the predecessor clearly suggests in terms of image quality. If you leave the exposure setting of automatic, it is almost impossible to create fail-exposed images. Experienced photographers will miss the other hand, manual adjustment and control options. The color reproduction on my hardware Calibrated NEC SpectraView is very natural, there are hardly any follow necessary. The contrast reproduction is nearly perfect. The pictures are sharp at all zoom settings into the corners, the autofocus pleasing fail. Even macro shots succeed very well. What has surprised me most is the effectiveness of the optical image stabilizer. Which was compared to that of the S9300 clearly optimized so that the extreme telephoto range is now out of your hands, without a tripod, available.

Of course, the price / performance ratio, these statements apply in relation to the size of the camera and. A full-frame DSLR delivers natural in every way better pictures - for multiple price and weight!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So if you are looking for a camera that makes technically (almost) perfect photos without photographic knowledge, you will find the S9500 a faithful companion. If you travel a lot and always want to know where the picture was taken, also. Thanks to the integrated GPS function and made available by Nikon as Freeware Software "Nikon View", the photos are not only viewed, sorted and evaluated, but also the exact location of the recording via Google Earth display. This only works outdoors when the camera when shooting was in contact with the GPS satellites. If you do not necessarily need the GPS function, you should turn off the menu because it sucks pretty brave on the battery, which would then faster again to the charging socket. The 22x zoom covers the range from 25mm wide angle to 550mm super telephoto (in KB relative). Videos with stereo sound and full HD resolution you can also rotate it.

The built-in flash does its job within its means. Who wants better illumination, a Metz MB 28 CS-2 digital should specify flash silver. The fires from the built-in flash and improves the image results significantly.

The battery is charged by the way with a USB charger directly into the camera. This can be useful when traveling because the charging process can also be done on a netbook or reasonably modern TV with USB port, for example, in the hotel room.

Is it the "jack of all trades"? Almost, but not quite. Whoever opts for an all-rounder with these features, the addition in the pocket has room, thereof one must be aware that this compromise has its drawbacks.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Video features:
Full HD, stereo micro incorporated connection not available for external microphone. The quality of the recorded video is a compact digital camera with focus Photo appropriate. A quick "Class 10" memory card is recommended for smooth video recordings.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Delivery
Camera, strap, charger, battery, USB cable, video cable (RCA), Nikon View CD-ROM, printed Quick Start Guide Detailed instructions for download on the website of Nikon.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is even more imperative for the operation / use needed?
A memory card. The Nikon Coolpix S9500 is compatible with the following: SD (up to 4GB); SDHC (up to 32GB) and SDXC up to 64 GB.
