IN DETAIL:
First of all: I'm 30+ and have therefore not to test the time all the current games. I focus on a few, but then more intense. My favorite is here Half-Life 2. This means that the Duke must be measured.
IDEA OF THE GAME
Compared to a Gordon Freeman of the Duke, of course absolutely politically incorrect, misogynist, macho and whipping boy, but we like him, too. His character is well illustrated and humorous by some scenes and especially the spells in the game ("So wrong and yet so right!"). This trappings to the Plink makes the game original and entertaining. Also, his life energy EGO calls and automatically replenishes after a time (no more goals) as the shrink ray a new idea. The game story and the worlds total varied, which especially in the beginning it varies greatly between carnage and mystery. Not endorsed by the flowing transitions. That you can only carry two weapons at a time, for me is not a drawback, you have to stop to decide ... My Lieblingsduo attended the RPG (rocket launcher) and MG.
GRAPHICS
The graphics are rather bland and is from the feeling a few years back. The buildings and inventory go, but also the movement of the monsters look very unnatural and checked. This also applies to the Duke, when you look at yourself in the mirror. Here I would have liked a 'pose' desired when one adores himself.
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
The AI of the monsters is rather low, the movements static. Especially stupid the beginning and end monsters and flying raketenfurzenden fat sacks (Assault Commander) have stayed with me.
While some monsters go in sometimes cover. But if you are on shooting, do not stop, even if you get hit. Pigcops not come for example through small doors, but rather than retire, try all the time to jump through the door, so you could shoot comfortably or even killed.
Intelligent, there are the flying and floating octopuses (Octabrains). They differ from when they are hit and throw back a rockets and mortars ... because you should think about it, especially in the "king bitch"!
CHARGING TIMES
But what are the flow of the game really inhibits the infinitely long loading times! I once timed it: I had to wait sometimes for 3 minutes at level change. Particularly annoying but it is when you die. Then the charging time will be exactly as long as when a Level is reloaded 'So will try each and the' Jump and Run 'part to the absolute test of patience! In addition, with me still was an interesting phenomenon: I have the game on 6 different days through and on two of them, the load times bearable ((were of course this may be due to the computer, but I compare it with Halflife2, the load times exactly the same machine were always short.)
UPDATE 7.10.2011: I've just played again. After the first patch the issue is resolved. Now it takes only a few seconds to the next level.
MULTIPLAYER
The final layer of Unkomfortabilität is the multiplayer mode! It began with the fact that I had grayed the multiplayer menu, so could not choose. It was always the hint 'You are not logged in. For multiplayer mode, you must be logged in. ' (Or similar). What do you mean that? In Steam I'm logged in, otherwise I could not play the game. The solution: You have to be logged in even the Steam Friends network in addition to the activation of the 'in-game community' (default). How come? This one needs at Halflife2 etc. not 'but good if that all problems would be solved, I could live with it. But it goes on:
The Games Browser is something of snoring lame (always compared to Halflife2 DM etc.)! You get then after 10 to 20 seconds 10 servers listed, you can not click if you do not interrupt the updating of the list. Well, I interrupt, double-click a server. Then appears for about one millisecond an overview of the current players (all I could make out) and after a reasonable time (Too bad, if I want to change the server. After leaving to visit a new server does not work with me. Either now I get no more games appear in the games browser or when double-clicking on another server comes' connection to the host interrupted ', like Duke or Steam, the menus are then again grayed' restart brings nothing here, only a Windows reboot fixes the problem. Super! Servers exchange only with Windows restart possible!
The whole multiplayer handling acts really as from the nineties, when you were lucky if you had done it at all to connect to a server and there also yes would remain before everything collapses again! Why not outsourced to the multiplayer mode as Halflife2, Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, etc., and uses the existing comfortable Steam menus?
Overall rating:
Were it not for the long load times (UPDATE 7.10.2011: No longer to patch) and the poorly usable multiplayer I would give the Duke with the other defects even 4 stars. But because of the multiplayer mode in my opinion is not so useful, I'll go down to 3 stars. Here I hope but still an update.
