Zotac ZBOX ID41 mini-PC (Intel Atom D525 CPU) (Personal Computers)

Customer Review

After I have for years a big noisy PC on my desk, I finally made up my mind as a Zotac ZBOX ID41 zuzulegen.

With 2 x 2 GB DDR-3 RAM Kingston 800/6400 and 320 GB 2.5 "hard drive and the detailed installation Introduction of ZBOX was the assembly is no problem. You should only take care of a Kondesator which close at the end of the hard drive" shaft "sits.

The Atom processor D525 1.8GHz provides 4 hardware threads available (2 cores with hyperthreading), which the performance clearly benefits. The cache is however rather small with 512 KB per core, which some CPU-intensive programs are running more slowly than usual.

The Nvidia ION chipset makes of the performance, as expected, some ago.

The operating system I use Fedora 17 64-bit, which with Nouveau (stable version) comes up as X11 graphics driver and GNOME 3.4.2 desktop. For multimedia I use the commercial Fluendo codecs and DVD player (once purchased can be used for each platform Download fresh again).

At Nouveau should also be noted that the driver the chipset of course not fully supported, but the performance is sufficient for my purpose of.

In order to use HDMI Audio, I have in "/etc/pulse/default.pa" nor the line "load modules module-alsa-sink device = hw: 1,7" need to insert and then select in the Audio settings.

In order to GNOME 3 with 1920 x 1080 used effectively, one must have the package "dconf editor" install and in the desktop / interface settings the text scaling factor hochschrauben (with me to about 1.4), as well as in "/ usr / share / gnome-shell / theme / gnome-shell.css "section" Small bold "the font size of 9pt to 11pt hochschrauben (affects Icon-titling).

For I have the Adobe Flash repository involved (for package manager YUM) and then the original Flash Player for Linux installed. Since this is still not fully hardware accelerated, the performance is by growing as expected.

Through Fedora 17 the use of modern software like Skype or Opera 4 12 is not a problem.

The performance of GNOME 3 in this configuration (with 1920 x 1080 Full HD as screen resolution) is acceptable, although somewhat hakelig. The application performance over the 2D area is very good. 3D I have specifically not been tested (except by GNOME 3). Performance of video playback is good, despite the lack of video acceleration (VDPAU).

Operating noise: By disk and CPU fan, the device makes a slight whirring from, but that is OK for me.

Overall, I am as a workstation in this configuration reasonably satisfied with the use of the device. If I can find a better Linux setup, I'll say this as a comment.

However, one thing I know already: namely, that I'll never make me a giant debris on the table! ;-)
