The camera focuses quickly and rapidly dissolves from. The release button is a bit strange, because it has to be pressed to focus quite deep and will be operated according to trigger again properly. A SHOT accidentally picture is there virtually no chance anyway. But one pays course at a camera with the attributes offered terms of resilience.
All the controls are otherwise small but sufficient grip designed. Even with XXL-hands you have no problem.
The operation is fairly intuitive. It's just important to know that the majority of shooting modes in the scene mode settled and for the program selection wheel is rotating on SZN. A video is created, however, quickly, since it is equal to its own record button for this.
The water tightness I could test successfully (though not 10m). The crash test I did not bring with intent and still must be long in coming. Since the lens is installed but the inside and therefore nothing stands out, this is with respect to avoiding consequential damage constructively certainly an advantage. The situation is different at the screen, which has quickly gotten by its size and by its exposed position his first scratches.
The fold-out display is not waiting for with too many degrees of freedom, since it is equipped with only one hinge. It can therefore only be tilted upwards. Thus, underwater photographs can be realized having to plunge without the head. Also overhead use is still possible by reversed Camera keeps (release button and hinge are then down). The built-in position sensor detects the situation and the image is still not correct and the head. Another positive side effect of the folding displays results at a lower deployment angle of 15 to 45 degrees and use as a prop. Since the camera can be set even without a tripod clean on floor, table or wall. A hit for images via self-timer, or even for long exposures. A tripod socket is nevertheless always available too.
The picture quality is good, but not great. Better than a good mobile phone and also the Olympus TG-850 offers a useful, optical zoom.
Then there are also the underwater shots and be damn good, whether pool or natural body of water.
From form factor ago the housing is relatively long, so be careful when purchasing a protective case, there is no will in any case included.
Battery and memory card slot are located to ensure reliable tightness together with the cable connections under a cover with sliding and hinged closure. The battery lasts for the first charge about 200 images (some with flash). The loading takes place in the device via an included USB power adapter, but unfortunately the camera side, no conventional plug (a mini or micro USB port would have been as useful). So you have explicitly allowed pay for the TG-850, also the correct USB cable to have with.
But that's really the only previously been accrued shortcoming. Otherwise, the gift has been well received.
