Both iPhone and iPad are used with protective cover and fit perfectly with the same setting of the retaining plate in the station. The charging cable itself is fixed by a solid rubber, which only the original Apple charging cable fits here well. The Amazon basis Lightning adapter cables have a slightly thicker charging plug. When pulling out of the station it must be held, as the Lightning connector but sits quite firmly. After a few weeks of daily use, I could not detect any signs of wear.
