I ordered this scanner primarily for my books that I wanted to include in the database software Delicious Library (which also manages the tools, DVDs and whatnot). In terms of the operating principle is very simple, actually a barcode reader actually acts as a keyboard. It will read barcodes and transcribe your numbers into bars.
Where the rub is that you configure the drive according to its system (eg Mac OS X (for me) or Windows), his country and the type of bar code read. So to do this, a bar code booklet is provided to configure the drive. This booklet allows you to enter configuration mode and configure everything. EXCEPT THAT, nothing explains the settings it is necessary to select and believe me, it's not always obvious!
So in delivery, you will find yourself with a bar code scanner (which will be easily recognized by your computer, but not yet operational) and a barcode booklet ... You're on your own!
The party just will not bother you as long as you do not have the code book under the eyes! :)
But as I struggled enough, here's the procedure that I followed (my case Mac OS X + wish to scan books so ISBN barcodes):
"Begin setting"
"Return to the factory setting"
"End setting"
"Begin setting"
"Keyboard Wedge"
---> "Save setting parameter"
"IBM PC / AT, PS / 2"
---> "Save setting parameter"
"French" (language choice)
---> "Save setting parameter"
"* CR + LF" (page 8)
---> "Save setting parameter"
"* EAN-13 / JAN-13 Enable" (P11 / Explanation: Output by CODE39 / Barcode parameters definition / choose APPROBATION barcode)
---> "Save setting parameter"
"End setting"
