Heroes is the pure composition forth nothing original. Live you could hear sometimes. But the final song, the sound, the voice, the arrangement, develop an almost overwhelming presence. A very successful song and manage a classic. The opener Beauty And The Beast, punchy, two fragmentary verses, a sort of chorus, repeat, then something like a bridge, again verse and Ref, strange and yet in the river. Even with Joe The Lion finds no classic song structures. Initially, a Rockriff, the drums, the singing, a short bridge interrupts the shapeless stanzas. But the song sounds nonetheless compelling and coherent.
V-2 Schneider, Bowie's tribute to the power plant Florian Schneider I count instinctively not to Intrumentalstücken, although apart from the title (twice) is sung anything. A clear, gray pop song, groovy bass, beautiful saxophone. Sense Of Doubt gives a cold, dark, oppressive and impressive atmosphere. Related to Warszawa from LOW. Moss Garden with Japanese Koto is the meditativste and most peaceful song "Heroes". Sounds a bit like the first signs of spring in this album mostly cold. Even at other times we hear optimistic approaches. Neuköln accesses the mood of Sense Of Doubt again, we hear this oriental saxophone tones. Bowie said he wanted to depict the isolation of the Turkish immigrants in Neukölln and Kreuzberg with the song. I find this very clearly.
The instrumental tracks like LOW bit better to me, but are still very successful for me. Thus, Berlin (as well as many other cities) between October and March really listen to when you're in the mood for it. A very emotional disc, barren than its predecessor. At the last visit to Berlin, April, very cold easterly wind, upon leaving the bridge museum, in the streets of Schöneberg, in Friedrichshain, etc., in many other places or streets, the plate fits (even today) as the soundtrack. At least for me. I think "Heroes" also timeless and not badly aged. Blackout has subscribed to the first two pieces, fragmentary melodic phrases are dropped and picked up again. Oblique, twisted, pounding piano, the singer is "... under Japanese influence ...", the call for the doctor. Most of the song, the lyrics of "Heroes" has been written and sung spontaneously before the micro. You can hear that and that's always very successful for my taste.
Sons Of The Silent Age is the only song of (besides maybe V-2 Schneider and to a lesser extent Heroes) classic song structures follows. A very nice, thoughtful piece, would also good "... hours" watch out for the 22 years later published. The Secret Life Of Arabia is an incredible song. Two very short verse fragments that are still different, then this is a repetitive chorus & the thing works, takes me. When decay of the songs I have not infrequently feel the verses were longer than the text reveals. When Fadeout chorus with clapping hands and loose piano the song leads to the dance floor to the wall. A "HEROES" -Popsong if such a thing exists.
A strange album, fragmentary, plenty of room for improvisation and Intrumentalstücke, impressive and rightly a classic!
