At first I was the Canon EF-S 17-55 too expensive, so I decided to first for the Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 really good for 350th I was quite happy, but unfortunately I missed a little Endbrennweite and the Image Stabilizer (IS on the I was used to).
So I ordered -only to test the EF-S 17-55 by Canon. It was delivered quickly so I could directly compare. First, startled by the weight of this lump, I thought a brief acquaintance. The Tamron is half the weight and pleasantly manageable. But after I worked with the new Canon, I was convinced of his qualities. It is at 17mm noticeably better than the Tamron, otherwise, the two do not take much. Aaaber 5mm longer telephoto are worth much, well and finally image stabilizer and USM for my motives. Overall, it's just more comfortable. So I kept it and the Tamron sells a friend (who is also happy).
With dust and Ca`s I do not have to fight. Against the dust but protects from the outset a cut filter. Also, I constantly use as with all my lenses suitable Streulichblende really -is almost always mandatory !!! In my experience, the aperture offer 4 to 11 (depending on the subject), the highest resolution. Aperture 2.8 I use at Al-motives (theaters, churches and parties).
All in all, the 17-55 best Canon EF-S lens, although the price of Canon for a "non-L-lens" was very set very high.
Who do not mind the high price, but can access calm.
I use on my EOS 50D also following lenses: 12-24mm Tokina 4.0 of Canon 70-200mm 4.0 L IS and some fixed focal lengths (30mm Tokina 2.8 Macro, Canon 50mm 1.4, Tamron 90mm 2.8 Macro). These lenses can I recommend all unrestricted.
