-High Image quality and resolution (in its camera category)
-28 Mm wide, 35 mm because simply is not enough!
-At Least 140 mm telephoto lens for distant shots
-Large, Sharp, high-resolution display (3 inches with 461,000 pixels)
-Blenden-, Time and manual mode (scene modes are sometimes not smart enough!)
-Belichtungsreihen (3 shots for HDR images!)
-Kameragewicht Lithium-ion batteries (easier, more practical load faster!)
-640x480 Video mode for rare video recordings
Housing / Features / General:
------------------------------
The Canon G10 irons at last from a few design flaws that bothered me the predecessor massively. The case is made for the first time halfway grippy and easy to hold with his right hand well alone. For a thumb rest on the back makes the housing and the front offers enough grip for the fingers. For the first time, you can set directly the ISO speed and exposure compensation via dials! That's really new, but I need rare. Still, it's great. As I often do architecture, landscapes and other shots, I am particularly pleased about the wide-angle 28 mm. While the recordings have a very strong ton effect, but can be repaired well with programs such as PT-Lens. The 140mm telephoto lens is also quite good, with 200-210 mm, as its predecessor would have been a highlight. Especially in the zoo, a longer telephoto but be very useful. For the lens with 2.8 to 4.5 is relatively bright. The 14.7 megapixel resolution of the pictures are of course a madness, when you think of the size of the small sensor (1 / 1.7 inches). Even the G9 had a similar sized sensor with 12 megapixels! Unfortunately, the producers do not seem to be as important image quality. The main thing we can get a higher megapixel number printed on the case and trump with other features. That sells a lot better. As I have seen in my photographs, my G10 camera beats but amazingly good. I shoot mainly with ISO 80 to 200, in order to avoid the strong sound of the mini-sensor. If it is absolutely necessary, I turn also been on ISO 400. Unless I picture only for small prints (13x15 cm) need, so that you can still live well. The shooting with ISO 800 or higher useful only as photographic evidence, but not really nice to watch. That, in my opinion, all compact cameras of all price ranges, unfortunately together! If I want pure image quality, I have to just take my SLR. Since there is no way around it!
Display
--------
The 3-inch display is a real pleasure. During recording, I see many details of the motive in advance and can better assess the picture, if I caught it. I also use the histogram preview screen, which reproduces the color distribution in real time. So you can guarantee better pictures, because you, among other things under or over exposure can prevent therefore.
RAW mode
-----------
For the Canon G10 also the RAW recording mode is typical, which I have not so much noticed the great benefit of this function. It provides the unfiltered image data directly from the sensor and is particularly well suited for later processing. In my previous conversions of images into JPEG format but I have seen no big differences from the camera's JPEG images. The extra effort is worth it not in most cases. The JPEG images in the camera are very well saturated with the colors and sharp that a post is not required. However, if you are using a high ISO number, there may be a little less noisy images in an individual case, if the edit by hand. Many more image details I have not perceived by the RAW mode.
Video mode
------------
The video mode of the camera corresponds to my expectations. 640x480 pixels at 30 fps are also good for DVD compilations. While other cameras from Panasonic advertise with HD resolution, but then the memory card is full quickly! In a 4 GB memory card for about 2 hours of footage on it fit. Nevertheless, I fear that the battery will be empty here before. So far I have been able to film 45 minutes easy in one piece. More I have not yet tested. This is the only digital zoom works during filming with most Canon really annoying. When shooting, you can preset the quality, optical zoom only before filming. The digital zoom ensures evil box formation (artefacts) when zoomed in. Canon still seems to pass up, so as not to take up running noise when zooming in the video. A pity, because the any spillage with a video editing would subsequently.
Conclusion: In general, the Canon G10 compact camera is a high-end expensive if you look at the performance. Already is to have an SLR for the price. But without good lenses these cameras bring some even less than some compact. Overall, I am with the new Canon G10, however, very satisfied. For each camera you have to take up certain compromises. Due to this reason from what is important to you !!!
