LinkStation, the second!

Buffalo LinkStation 420 LS420D0402-EU High Speed NAS 4TB (2x 2TB HDD 1x Gigabit, RAID 0/1) (Accessories)

Customer Review

Mich LS WX2.0TL / R1-EU had indeed convinced 2TB Buffalo so that I bought for reasons of space a second NAS this brand. The business with Amazon, including the delivery way, was again very good.

This time I've mentioned from space reasons resorted to the full and ordered the 8GB model. Thus, I should have enough :) The LinkStation is already set up (Raid way for full memory) first. Incidentally, the decor was quite simple. If you have ever set up a NAS, you will get along well with the LinkStation. Basically, no other process than when I first LinkStation.

Of course, I once visited the Web Interface to make available there the plates after initial setup. And since the first shock: The Web has changed in appearance. Actually, it has nothing more to do with my old friends. It almost looks minimalist and it is not as colorful as held previously. Grays predominate. But it is kept clear and after a bit rumschauen I've yet discovered the important functions and will soon be time to test the additional functions. The menu bar is now located on the left side of the window, instead of as previously at the upper side. Has everything. From the Settings pages of the Chrome browser, at least in the expanded view of the settings In the simplified view of the settings you will be out with Wizards and made the Basics chapter. It is nice that you can let yourself Show to all statements. Although I am not against the old design of the LinkStation web interface, the new is definitely better thought out and more fluid to use. This is certainly also due to the better than the older LinkStation processor. My fear that the new LinkStation has a tough-to-use web interface just has not materialized. Also operations like deleting the RAID array, formatting and checking the hard drives, etc running noticeably faster than the old LinkStation. Incidentally, I use the Chrome browser for these purposes.

Negative me so far noticed the missing "Auto Power Button". Obviously, the new LinkStation does not support more Auto Power? :( Have also been nothing in the settings found it. Well, that would be a downer. Is it a killer feature of the old LinkStation and would readily devices can be transferred to the new generation? Why also vornerein a point deduction in the evaluation.

But now erfreu I myself first. To mass memory and apparently fixed Datenübertragunsgeschwindigkeit Bin grad files on copy from the computer onto the NAS and as speed is always more than 50 MB / s output. This is a big plus compared to the old LinkStation that came grad mal so on half.

For quick access on the NAS Navigator2 NAS continues to be used. One can as usual from there the NAS link directly to the desktop, so that you have even faster access. Only I find there now 2 LinkStation before :) By the way I get displayed as net space 3709 GB / disk, so are 7418 GB storage net available.

The noise of the LinkStation is still audible. One should this may not have standing right next to him. Is just the fan. I already expected, but I also have the opportunity to position a few meters away from the computer LinkStations. Long LAN cable from the router to the computer thank. As determined disturb off some, so the operating noise.

I also find that the black plastic housing makes a good quality impression. It has roughly the same dimensions as my old LinkStation.

EDIT: Have now created a couple of folders, including access permissions and Webaccess established. Bin quickly come to the goal. Although I have not yet external access to the LinkStation tested ('ll certainly but soon do), but internal-only access, but I am assuming that this will work. And why not, the settings are almost the same compared to the old LinkStation. Also the client for receiving the time and the e-mail notification for status messages has been set (with successful sending a test email updates). It's really not complicated to set up the LinkStation. One must of course be aware that forwards to access the Internet on the NAS using web access / FTP the ports in question from the router to the LinkStation. Here one needs access to his router and need to know how something is to be established. Alternatively, of course, can be exploited also UPnP. But that's not my thing, I configure those settings rather himself and, renouncing any extra services.

Have also just done the test and copied a large folder with many files contained on the LinkStation on the SSD of my computer. Since I had +/- 70 MB / s. On the packaging is indeed written "Up to 80 MB / s" (the Amazon deal is of even "up to 100 MB / s") spoke. I find that quite a good result. Even with the HDD of my computer I Reach similar Erbebnisse. 1 GB is since copied flight :)

A bit of a shame when Webaccess I find that still uses the same version as the old LinkStation used. It works, however, and that's what counts. Only a fresher design, such as was done to the Web Interface I would have wished for WebAccess.

Edit 20/12/13: I grad again made a copying test and the purpose for a single 6GB file (zipped DVD-ISO) from the NAS moved to the computer using Windows Explorer file. I came to an amazing result. When I copy the SSD, then the Geschwindigtkeit of moves at the beginning c. 110 MB / s slow down up to 60 MB / s at the end of the copy process. I was almost disappointed first when copying large files due to this rapidly decreasing Übertragungsggeschwindigkeit! Now comes: Then I got the same file from the NAS moved to the HDD, here is consistently between 100 and 110 MB / s output (!). May be something? I got the process is repeated, the same result. Am * degree confused why my hdd significantly faster writes than my SSD * This also means that for the first time my GigabitLAN encountered almost to its limits. Such results so far I could not even reach approximately. I mark now not so good with the NAS hardware from ... but if the runs so, then good hardware was obviously built.

Have also the FTP server "set". But since there is not much to do, except for the folder shares to activate "FTP". Incidentally, this is also necessary for WebAccess. You have the LinkStation tell which folders should be selected for FTP / web access. So there is never vornerein access to the entire disk contents. Only the folders that have been selected for it. As before you can be granted anonymous access, create user accounts or use "inherited folder permissions". In the router the FTP port of course you have a friend for extenen access from the Internet. Did the website 2ftp.de my FTP server from the outside and was successfully tested upload something.

A small problem arises, however: Both LinkStation use port 21 for FTP. I have not yet figured out how and whether one can change that. If both LinkStation FTP is active and the router port from the Internet passes, then I always land on the other LinkStation, eg when testing with 2ftp.de. The solution in my case, then first, to block FTP access for the first LinkStation in the router. Mir is the only noticed because I wanted to test the FTP erence the new LinkStation, but always ended up on the old links Transportation. Although everything is configured correctly. How do I get it to land from the Internet to the new LinkStation when passed in both the FTP port, I have to find out :)

Edit 23/12/13: If you checked the firmware update in the settings of the LinkStation, you get the message that the firmware would be up to date. In my case, that was not true. When the Firmware Version 1.11 will be displayed. But when one visits the Buffalo website and the downloads look to this link station, you will festellen that a firmware version 1.30 is available for download. You have the file downloaded (c. 190 MB) and unzip it. One finds an executable lsupdater.exe. This takes you and the LinkStation is brought up to date. It takes so 20-25 minutes. After the update, the Sleep Timer are (LinkStation drives up and down at the desired time) and Direct Copy (if, for example a USB flash drive plugged into the USB port on the LinkStation, the contents of the sticks being copied to a previously definable folders) available , Have fun update)

Incidentally, the auto-updater did not seem to function properly, because he just did not point to the new firmware in the settings. Also NASNavigator has informed nothing. Well, maybe it works so now with the new firmware :)

Then there have been tested the built-in torrent client. It is used uTorrent. As usual, the required ports (default = 9090) in the router forwarding, call the extended LinkStation settings, then go to the BitTorrent settings and set the desired folder for downloads (perhaps must first be created?). Now you can go directly to the download manager from here (it later but also by the simple settings) and uses this first default username admin. The password field is left blank. Now opens the download manager and you still need a torrent file or a link to a torrent file and can start with downloading :)

Another little tip: If you would like to call the torrent client without calling only the web interface of the LinkStation ... in the address bar of their browser you are the internal LAN IP or the network name of the LinkStation, followed by: "Port number" and / gui ... Ex .: 192.168.0.67:9090/gui
Hey presto, you have the download manager of the LinkStation in the browser window :) You can configure for external access. Of this you can also bookmark pages store and / or create a desktop shortcut and you have quick access. This also works with WebAccess and FTP access. One has then but at the end of the address of course customize the port number and / ui tap (instead of / GUI for the download manager).
I created 4 desktop shortcuts for this link station. One of the settings, one for WebAccess, one for the download manager and one for the direct FTP access via Windows Explorer. Alternatively, you can also take a program like FileZilla to comfortably have FTP access to the shares.

I would, incidentally, like the ability to turn off the LinkStation in the settings. It is indeed offered no Auto Power. In the settings you can see the LinkStation but only start new.

Edit 26/01/14: A word about Direct Copy. First you have to enable the feature in the settings. You can then connect an external hard drive, USB drive, digital camera, etc to the LinkStation and transfer the contents of the drive on a pre-determined in the Settings folder of the LinkStation. Once the external device is connected and recognized, it is necessary to the function button on the front of the LinkStation press. Copying begins immediately. This way you can connect their digital camera to the LinkStation and save photos :)
If the external device to copy to be separated again after a successful, this is achieved by keeping the function button for 3 seconds or go to the settings of the LinkStation and there disconnects software side (in the drive index). Then you can remove the external device safely. As with Windows PCs, as normally you do not just pull the USB stick or the cable from the port before you have not disconnected the device :)

Edit 23/02/14: Firmware Version 1.31 is here ... Changelog here => [...]

I'm curious, what bring future firmware updates. My old LinkStation has long received time updates, I hope also for the new LinkStation.

Edit 11/08/14: In the meantime, there were 2 firmware updates, 1:32 + 1:33 currently. Big changes do not fall on me, are probably more fixes.

Another note for people who want to buy a NAS station as the LinkStation for data redundancy. You can use the device in RAID 1 mode. That is, one of the two disks is used for storing data, while the other disk is used for mirroring of the stored data. This is done automatically. Now If one of the two plates, there is an exact copy on the other disk. This means redundancy, a hard drive fails, it immediately jumps the other disk. The data is still available. When we talk about data backup, then data is copied to an external medium. That is, if you're like me chooses the 8TB model, then you can get a (!) Use 4TB hard drive. In RAID 1 mode then you have no 8TB storage net, but 4. The 8TB when you have RAID 0 mode or with deactivated Raid. So you have to decide: redundancy or maximum storage space. Both together is not possible! I do not need Raid and have it disabled. By default, the LinkStation is running 0 mode in the raid. You can later change the RAID mode from 0 to 1 or disable entirely. But then the hard drives are always formatted! The best think in advance how you want to use the device. Are the plates times well filled, or even fully, then the Dare rescue involved is of course a time-consuming matter :) The device has a Gigabit LAN port, but push a few hundred or even thousands of gigabytes of data via LAN will take so many hours ,

Edit 03/29/15: Current firmware version is now the 1.80
Use the 420 for over a year now and am very zurfrieden so. Especially the huge space (2x 4TB = plenty of reserves. The war I not soon full) and the fixed data transmission like very much. I had demletzt over 800GB data on the LinkStation "park", only this short time later play back on my computer. Sure, it takes a few hours. But how long would such an action taken at times of 100 Mbit LAN? Oh man, there would be days have passed. Now it was 8-9 hours, made almost overnight.
Such devices as the LinkStation are now one of my basic equipment on the computer. There is absolutely no problem if the computer fails times. The data are first so sure on the NAS. Property there is also a full backup of my Windows system are, which I (tested concrete) if required via LAN back games.
The 420 8TB was not "cheap", I had paid 475 (purchased directly from Amazon). But it is worth the price, and from the other NAS manufacturers you get a device with such features and performance probably not at the price. Sure, there are criticisms ... device is not always quiet, there is no auto power (why?!?). But throughout the 420 is a great device :)
