First, I had to experience the analog Minolta Dynax 2xi a Nikon D 60. Also this camera made very beautiful, crisp, sharp images possible. Only the CCD sensor came just at ISO 800 already at its limits.
Then I have the D 5100 ordered me in Amazon since they seem the best all-round package offered: Very good Lowlight-quality, swivel display, 3 years more advanced technology, great scene modes and a good video function. Full of expectation I have then tried. I though so far Scan Jpeg, the sensor had no great advantages for me. The handling has somehow not quite convinced me, and I lacked the grid lines in the viewfinder.
So I tested the parallel D 90. The handling was clearly more comfortable. Looking through the viewfinder is brilliant: bright and clear. Then I photographed the same lenses (35 / 1.8, 18-105 VR 18-200 VR) and the same lighting conditions (ISO, aperture, shutter speed, sometimes with lightning / SB 600). Interestingly, I find the results of the D jpegs at 90 for me attractive (see the many different but). Combined with the direct access to white balance, ISO, AF mode, and with AF motor and stop-down, 2. Display and master ability (and of better batteries) this is still a top price-performance ratio. But I suppose the loss of the swivel screen and better video function into account, especially since I have a relatively good camcorder, and my archive on the small DVs prefer.
In addition, one should not be underestimated: The handling. The D 90 was me immediately comfortable to hold, the D 7000 is just too hard, the D 5100 a tad too small.
With the D 90 I'm happy now and I hope to learn much more and always to take better pictures.
Tip: Installing GGS-glass on the 2 displays against scratches and possibly before a broken display.
05/11/2011:
Incidentally, I have now tried the video function times. One gets the prices so there are known to be only mono sound and no nachführenden autofocus, but for small movies, when the video camera has remained at home, it already reaches. The manual focus makes a lot of fun, but a little difficult. For the price, the D 90 is really good in my opinion.
Addendum 13.11.2012:
I wanted to give it a go and have the D 90 sold and bought myself the D 7000. Yes, not bad. Slightly better picture quality might. And of course more comfortable videos. But she was too heavy for me, I also had problems with the Focus and several lenses on the D 7000. Since I somehow not so liked how the D 90 I then not so often used. Therefore I sold again and a second D 90 is on its way to me ... I am looking forward to it!
