I remember very well the first time I saw the video for "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" on television. I told myself "This is not possible, even a pseudo grunge band that offers nothing new! ". It must be said that at the time, radios seized insipid grossoyeurs the famous sound of Seattle to the chain ... And how is interested in Smashing Pumpkins while Pavement had just released "Wowee Zowee" ? It's all the same curiosity that pushed me to listen more attentively to this double album, listening which proved in the end extremely appreciative account. Of course, initially, we say that is a mix of more or less confessed three fundamental pillars of rock (hard rock side of Black Sabbath - even the first Led Zeppelin, the versatility of pop psychedelic and sometimes inspired melodies of the Beatles, and the Gothic years jolts Cure, Bauhaus and other Bunnymen). And ultimately, magic undoubtedly operates. We say not only that this work is important (dizzying variety of styles), Billy Corgan has a timbre not annoying but becoming THE highlight of the disc, but also that these pumpkins finally have their own sound (their famous distortions Guitar ZERO present, recognizable among thousands! and memorable drum rolls Chamberlain who certainly is a penguin intern in his specialty), their own combination of genres, their own understanding of emotions (not just a classic alternating between big fat sound and syrupy ballads), in short, their own identity. And moreover, they are totally free from grunge movement. And then there is this amazing creativity (even more bewildering when one considers the great procession of faces B written at the time, with little disposable) and that inspiration flawless. Mellon Collie, with its efficient singles (where some urgency is particularly felt on Tonight, Tonight, and ZERO), its ums metalheads and cathartic (in his now pumpkinien so) majestic entrance and exit at the piano, his ballads burst -Coeur and epic tracks (whose complex of monuments rock opera "Thru The Eyes Of Ruby" and "Porcelina Of The Vast Oceans") is an ambitious and comprehensive work, if not the final bombastic than that, which is sufficient to itself and whose music may well be enough for a while eventually (many of which Mellon Collie remained rooted to the bottom of their channel for weeks ...). I have since listened to albums Smashing Pumpkins with relish and making use until the skin (well ... except Machina), but I never listened to "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" ...
