First of all: For the firmware update problem in the often installed Seagate hard drives, there is a solution that I describe at the bottom.
I use this hard drive as 3TB version is now exactly one month. Priced at 119 euros, the decision really did not fall for this model difficult now. It brings enormous space with an aluminum housing, good design and USB 3.0 at a price, which is less than the cost of a single 3TB HDD without external case (!).
The build quality is impeccable; the aluminum finish actually looks classy and haptically very appealing. Besides, it can ave a quick and effective heat dissipation from the hard drive to the ambient air, which is essential for a long life. The inscription "TrekStor DataStation maxi light 3.0" I find a bit exaggerated, but does not interfere further the overall picture. On the bottom there are four soft rubber feet, so that the housing does not scratch and the vibrations are somewhat muted. The back has room for the (unfortunately quite chunky) USB 3.0 connector, the socket for the plug from the power supply and, very positive, a mechanical power switch. On the top there is a little too bright, blue status LED.
The USB cable is quite short, but should be sufficient for almost any application. Should not be the case, there are extensions for USB 3.0 cable. A simple exchange of the cable is not possible, since the connection to the external HDD has a special connector shape and, as far as I know, no standard is. The cable from the power supply, however, is much longer, which makes sense. The PSU itself seems to be working very effectively, as it is even with long, active operation of the hard drive heats hardly noticeable.
The installation was straightforward. If the HDD is not recognized immediately, it must be initialized in the Disk Management tool, as already stated in several other reviews. After the full 2.72 TB available. While the built-in HDD is working me audibly, but in the tone characteristic very pleasant and almost completely unobtrusive frequency. The access sounds are pleasantly quiet.
Installed in my case, as well as in almost all other known to me TrekStor DataStation Stations of the 3TB version, a Seagate ST3000DM001 - 9YN166 OEM disk with the known faulty firmware CC4B. With this firmware the read / write head moves the hard drive after a very short inactivity already in the park position, which leads to the hard drive at very unpleasant noises when a new access. Seagate strongly recommends a firmware update, which is not readily in this case, but possible. To update the hard drive would have to be removed from the case and installed internally in the PC. This is lost Grantie by TrekStor, since the case has to be opened. Seagate itself offers no guarantee, as it is an OEM product.
The somewhat complicated solution for this is the program HDDScan 3.3, available for free here: [...] This allows the "Advanced Power Management" of Seagate hard drive, which is responsible for the operation of parking the head to turn off. The problem here is that this setting will be lost when you log off or shut down the hard drive from the computer. However, the program offers the possibility to create a .bat file, the described "APM" function of hard disk disabled by double. The steps are in front as follows:
1. Open the program 2. Select the hard drive: ST3000DM001 - 9YN166 3. Click on the round button "New Task" in addition to the hard drive selection 4. Select the option "Build Command Line" 5. Select the line "Advanced Power Management" on the right to select "Disable" 6. Click "Save" 7. Rename the file as desired and save the most on the desktop or directly on the external HDD.
Now you have every time you connect the hard disk to the computer or click after separation from power this .bat file once twice and the error is eliminated. Admittedly not a very practical solution, but the only known me.
Apart from this shortcoming I can absolutely recommend this external hard drive. Especially considering the price. I hope to have helped you a little.
