Jane Eyre loses early their parents and is taken up by her loving uncle. When he faded away, it is their malicious aunt Mrs. Reed and their equally hostile and terribly spoiled children helpless. Her aunt pushes the soulful and sometimes quick-tempered girl a short time later in the reformatory from Lowood, which is headed by a self-righteous Pastor. There she meets the slightly older and very quiet Helen, who is her best friend quickly.

Grown Jane applying for the position of governess for Adele coquettish, the ward of the wealthy Edward Rochester, on the secluded manor Thornfield Hall. Mr. Rochester they treated initially gruff and cynical, but he soon developed regardless of all class distinctions feelings for Jane who feels loved for the first time in their lives. Mr. Rochester makes her even a marriage proposal, but he harbors a dark secret, which raises Janes life completely off track.

With "Jane Eyre" (published in 1847 under the pseudonym Currer Bell), the Anglo-Irish writer Charlotte Brontë created a classic of literary history, the date already several dozen times was filmed. The oldest films were filmed in 1909 (Italy) and 1910 (USA) and presumed lost. The present here BBC adaptation by Ruth Wilson as the title character Jane Eyre and Toby Stephens (son of the British acting legend Maggie Smith) as Edward Rochester is one of the most successful well in my eyes.

This is partly because the miniseries is some 230 minutes, and thus more detailed than for example the half as long movie of 2011. As with film adaptations of novels usual, were still left out many details from the book. So is not shown that Janes situation in the reformatory improved by their friendly teacher Miss Temple, nor that Jane a letter to the lawyer of her uncle writes that the impression given by his brief appearance at the end of the third episode Janes further life. A more accurate version which included these scenes, the mini-series from 1983 is a good, albeit very theatrical acting Timothy Dalton as Mr. Rochester, that it felt a bit dusty in comparison.

That many details left out and other scenes are to invented - well made dramaturgical reasons - is common in fictional works, so my main criticism is of the German translation. Anyone who knows the English version, can only marvel at the mistakes that have been made here. So is "drawing room 'literally as" character space "translates. It actually does mean" drawing room "salon or drawing room. Mr. Rochester therefore invites Jane not in the room a character, but in the living room where it is to keep him company.

Another translation error happens for example in the fourth part (8 minutes). In the original, the staff clears the Rivers Jane Family with the following sentences on the financial situation of the Rivers sisters on:
"I do not know how long they'll load here. They have not a penny between them. The girls will have to go for governesses soon."
Into German these sentences have been translated as follows:
"I do not know how long they have to stay here. The girls no longer have Penny. They are probably going to governesses soon."

What is to please "I do not know how long you have to stay here" hot ???
The girls do not have to remain living in their own home, but you want to stay there. Instead YOU home from go away because they have no money, in an uncertain future where they must live with their employers and employers and exposed them completely helpless, and in a time when the women's rights - we call it times - were very modest.

And what is: "You will probably soon go to governesses" mean ???
You will not governesses go, you'll have to look for a job as governess, where she must raise the spoiled children of the rich, while they probably can afford himself never own children.
Correct it would have to be: "I do not know how long they can stay here, you do not have a penny, you must (be) probably soon looking for a job as a governess / see / accept it..."

Amused, I was also, as Mr. Rochester Jane interrogates about Pastor St.John Rivers and thereby falls the funny phrase: "Who is he, this river lad?" In the original, he asks: "What about his brain, this Rivers fellow?", Where "Rivers" is a surname. "Fellow" can 'translate' man, man image, guy, dude, boy "," river "means" river ". Mr. Rochester therefore asks something like: "As it is with the intelligence of this Rivers lads?" Here both the word "fellow" and the name "Rivers" was 'translated so from "this fellow Rivers", that "this type Rivers / man / guy / guy'" a "river guy" was. (Part 4, 52 minutes)

The choice of words is also completely inappropriate in some cases. So the minor character Mason says in the second part after an attack of his mentally ill sister: "She's freaking out." Hardly conceivable that anyone mid-19th century had the word "freaky" used. Finally, a few words for synchronization. In English Jane's voice soft and melodic sounds and Mr. Rochester's voice more expressive and appealing as in the German translation.

Too bad also that Jane's friendship with Helen Burns was not given more time. Helens death and the school are almost autobiographical, finally the couple Maria and Patrick Brontë had six children, two of whom, the eldest daughters Mary and Elizabeth in the "Clergy Daughters' School" have died within a few weeks of tuberculosis, a boarding school, Charlotte and Emily also the (Wuthering Heights) have visited. Other autobiographical details might have incorporated in their book Charlotte. So it was from 1839 to 1841 even worked as a governess, and one of their terrible pupils gave her a Bible on her head, like the young Jane at the beginning of the book / the film is hit with a book on her head.

Otherwise I can only recommend the award-winning four-part series. Toby Stephens plays the Mr. Rochester with great expressiveness. Rochester is mysterious and sullen, suffering and passionate at the same time. Ruth Wilson as Jane Eyre is acting with a great strength. She is calm, patient, thoughtful and kind-hearted and stands firmly to their moral convictions. The actors go perfectly together. Mr. Rochester is fascinated by Jane because she's not intimidated by him, but confronts him confidently. His previous wife acquaintances were superficial and vain. Jane is the opposite of smart, willing to learn and humbly.

In addition to the good operating actors and the equipment, the nature shots and the secondary characters that I liked in this film. As mentioned, all the details are not consistent - the actor Stephen is described much more attractive than Mr. Rochester in the book, which is why it seems strange when he asks Jane if she finds him attractive, and she answers "no" to. St.John's in this adaptation dark-haired and not feel cold enough for Miss Blanche Ingram is blond instead of black-haired - as disturbing but I have not felt this.

Conclusion: successful implementation of the literary classic
