Furtwängler left for posterity two recordings of this symphony, one of 1951 in Salzburg (still available), and it dates from 1942. The quality of this CD leaves far behind the other editions (DG, Archipelago. ..). The original tapes were used here to unveil a miking exceptional for the time. I nevertheless attributed as 4 star this CD because of the price charged by Testament, really too high for a historical record (presumably free of copyright). Much cheaper, and Tahra Naxos Historical realize they too prowess (see for example Beethoven's Eroica 1944 has just been released in SACD). We do not forget the 4,5,6,7,8 & 9 symphonies published in a box by Music & Arts Symphonies 4,5,6,7,8 & 9 (fifth from 1942 is also included in this package) into a sound very honorable and with a quality / quantity much better price than Testament. Apart from this objectionable pricing policy, we can only welcome the "revelation" of this document, in an unexpected sound quality for this capture 1942.
