At first briefly about the history of the album: Faith No More came in 1989 with the first album with Mike Patton on vocals (overall, it was already the 3rd) good in the mass of, first successes were celebrated. Suddenly there was funky bass lines, metal riffs, rap vocals and many others, various elements on a plate and all of the same band. There were at that time (Live at the Brixton Academy) published a total of 5 singles and shortly thereafter also a live album, which includes most of the "The Real Thing" song. Yes, this one is definitely one of the albums that you should have heard at least once and could also buy "blind". The listener gets 11 songs purposed as they could not be more different: 1. "From Out of Nowhere" (Single): (for the fat Main Reef) a really good opener selected, a slightly faster number with a catchy chorus. At first for me, the FNM song now "only" an average number. Makes high praise at this point to the bassist of here really interesting work and thus enhances. 2. "Epic" (Single): Probably one of their most famous songs. Here the aforementioned rap vocals are used, the bass is not really creative but underlaid with the drums just by the very energetic Patton rapped verse perfectly. Everything else (chorus, solo, the last 3 minutes ...) are completely "epic". Nevertheless, in retrospect (after intensive hear the disk) seems a bit overstated the song. 3. "Falling to Pieces" (Single): For me personally, one of the "better" songs (sounds kinda weird in this case because each is great) this CD (and certainly with the best text on this disc). The bass is richer than ever, a funky keyboard melody and a fine vocal performance by Mr. Patton. I think for someone who does not know the tape would be this one song the perfect introduction. 4. "Surprise! You're Dead!" (Single): The shortest and most aggressive at the same time number: For the first time the handset is on Jim Martin's guitar skills attention (on this album of course), which was certainly responsible for the metal elements in the Faith No More universe. Bitter evil riffs, as they could also come from Megadeth and Co, paired with sardonic lyrics sung by a Patton how previously only knew him by Mr. Bungle (and even there such anger came only rarely used). A really untypical song for the guys (in a good way). 5. "Zombie Eaters": Very few people think of listening to this song for the first time because how much this song could change after the first two minutes, probably just expect a 3-4 minute acoustic guitar piece and that a change have foreseen a this magnitude certainly had not expected: As I said, the first two minutes are quiet, spooky, showing the band in turn from a completely different angle, but there are 3 following the "Zombie Eaters" make an absolute masterpiece .. .Patton it could simply not have better sung, the "atmospheric" Keyboards are used perfectly and the guitar rips almost like at number 4. At a time eight minutes shows the genius Patton how different one man may seem like a lot of emotion you can put in a song, plus the spacey beat, the keyboards sound like as if they were from a science fiction movie and the great riffs of Messrs Martin and Gould. Faith No More at it's best. 7. "Underwater Love" (Single): After songs "strenuous" as the two earlier comes this indeed surprising, but also very convenient. The bass is strong again brought to the fore, the song structure is simple, the song has got it quickly ... a perfect single. The break up of the LP in the form of "Underwater Love" does the album really well, one of my favorite favorite ... indispensable! 8. "The Morning After": Good track, I would classify with 1 under the heading "Average FNM songs". However, it is (again) Mike Patton, which makes this song really exciting (although it is in between, built in the instrumental parts an interesting mood). Cool piece. 9. "Woodpecker from Mars": The exact opposite to the song before, here it is proved that the musicians vocal acrobatics can even without Mike Patton: Yeah, FNMs first instrumental song, but what kind of! A gorgeous, oriental-inspired basic melody is drawn through crazy speed and soundscapes. As with "Surprise! You're Dead!" you realize what Jim Martin has really it, but in an entirely different way, as well as the term "epic" here has an entirely different meaning than in the other two of mine as designated epic songs.
