After I got the router, I was immediately on the ASUS website to search for the latest firmware. As I also previously had an ASUS router, I knew there between two firmware versions can be worlds - but not necessarily. On delivery, the version 1.0.1.1 was installed, which functioned perfectly routing and Internet connection. Since I use the router, or the hard drive to be connected but would operate as a NAS and in the most current firmware improvements were promised, I have this version 1.0.1.3 installed fairly quickly. I should not have done better.
The following features of the router can to, were important to me:
* FTP server
* DLNA server
* Samba server
* Download Master
So exactly what you can use so good for home network. With version 1.0.1.3 only worked the FTP server.
Samba no trace and DLNA very, very rudimentary (with a Playstation 3) - not really. Because it only parts of the hard drive contents were displayed. I am not quite clear until today, why and which folders and files are displayed, while others partout not appeared.
The Download Master was always out-of-order, because he could never find the connected medium, whether USB flash drive, USB drive, FAT32, NTFS or ext2.
After countless hours, reset, restart, reconfiguration and finally a support ticket with ASUS I have the router to Amazon returned as well as the support confirmed to me that the router would be defective. Here again is a big compliment to Amazon pronounced as I got within 2-3 days a replacement unit sent free of charge. There's times to complain about nothing at all.
New router, new luck ...
Unwrapped, plugged in, turned on, and lo and behold, here is shipped version 1.0.1.2 - exactly the version between my versions bisherig tested. Without anything to configure, was then to find immediately the hard disk on the network (router name to talk about \\) and the Download Master revealed previously unknown features, because suddenly the FAT32 formatted USB hard drive was (still) recognized. Test manner downloads (HTTP and Torrent) ran without problems. The FTP server also ran. WOW, then yes is lacking only the Streaming to PS3.
"Only ..."
The Playstation showed me brave new media server in the list, but the first click immediately a DLNA error number appeared xxx (I do not remember). So I went back to look for a new firmware and fortunately the version 1.0.1.4 was now in place, which should ensure more stability in the DLNA area. With trembling hands I have installed this version, with the hope that the now functional server (FTP and Samba) would continue to run. After the update, however, only a tiny fraction of the data contained in the PS3 was available. Whether music, pictures or videos. There were very many folders just not displayed. Fortunately, FTP and Samba were still. Download master, it has unfortunately again gathered with this version then, as the program version did not match the firmware version. An automatic update always fails and the ASUS site is still to find any updated utility version. But I think the Download Master runs again when the new version is released.
So there was still the problem with the poor, or almost non-existent Streaming to PS3. If * any * file had arrived, I would have understood, yes, but the files were missing, had nothing in common. Not even a simple .jpg files were displayed. Looking for any mistakes I have made the system log of the router closer look. There appeared again the following error on "shortFileIdentifier ..." and "short read ..." with subsequent specification of a file, such. As an MP3 file. ONLY A handful of files were bemeckert here again cyclically, all MP3 files.
These few files I then deleted from the hard disk and suddenly all folders and all files not displayed were previously available in the PS3!
I am absolutely not clear why an MP3 file in the folder "Music" can affect a completely different folder called "Video" or "Photo". The files were not "evil", ie provided with cryptic symbols and the like. I do not know what has disturbed since. But since I can do without the few pieces of music, I am happy (with the exception of the Download Master).
Conclusion:
* Firmware versions earlier than 1.0.1.3 may no DLNA (because of a protocol error)
* For firmware versions greater 1.0.1.3 there is still no Utilties (Download Master)
* Errors are very difficult (and impossible for lay people) to find
* The ASUS Support has several days to tell me "We go that you take time to another USB stick. If it then does not work, the unit is probably broken. Then replace it around."
* When I have the USB drive operated NTFS formatted, the router has all the data written broken. A simple copy & paste a JPG file has destroyed them, so she was then no longer readable. I am therefore again changed to FAT32 - but now have the familiar 2GB limit, but can live with it. In version 1.0.1.4 has been on NTFS kernel also screwed, but I probably will not try NTFS again
* FTP server outside working properly. ASUS "donated" even a fixed name, so that one also from "outside" drankommt with a dynamic IP address. His name you can choose your own, and thus is the FTP server and then be reached as follows: ftp://MeinName.asuscomm.com
* FTP server in the WLAN brings me up to 8 MB / s, which I think is OK
* Streaming of MTS files to PS3 works, although before the film's release seems a bit is buffered. So it takes a little until the movie starts. Forward and back flushing works then more or less well. But that's enough for me out completely
* Printers, Webcam and Gigabit LAN I have not tested with me
* For me, only a few files have disturbed the DLNA function. Who has more such files will probably want not necessarily delete this
Now, after a total of just over four weeks and two devices support (* cough *) by the manufacturer, I have now managed to get 3 of 4 promised functions properly up and running. Who has time and desire to tinker, to check for errors and between teasing animal, which can be accessed safely. Who only a fast router (and that's it really) want and no FTP / Samba / streaming need, may also buy. All others would be better advised not to, because you will be left very fast very alone in errors with this device.
Overall, there's so 4 stars from me because the device sometime with a lot of work and does what it should. The software and firmware on the other hand is facing fault tolerance and functionality almost an impertinence.
