The box is made of durable plastic, the liner for the batteries is a massive rubber block. My Eneloop AA cells fit perfectly, also can be my box close properly and open. AAA cells naturally have a bit more game, but they can move more than a few millimeters in their rubber tub (the rattling noise dampens very good) then again not. That will not last long the shutter is pure speculation, personally, I have had good experiences with the speakers. I use several of these boxes, purchased in 2008, for my photo equipment, so far without any problems or defects. Blue moon I have the boxing times disassembled and washed with washing up liquid, already they look like new again. I would the boxes even not call it cheap, on the other hand I have been about 5 years now complain in use and can not therefore me about the quality.
