Legal multifaceted and agile sound his pieces. The music is in constant motion, without losing itself in a disorientation, which was previously my greatest fear. But James Newton Howard would not Shyamalan Tribe composer when he was just now settles on the skin comfortable in his hitherto most promising work. Currently, the film is indeed übelst by all critics torn (rightly), but that has nothing to do with JNHoward. While Shyamalan has failed as a "film-tamer" JNH starts developing as Musikbändiger.
Compared to James Horner's Avatar, Howard had far less time and did not express mix tape. In this score, he plays out its full strengths: namely his penchant sensitive and lonely acting subjects, dynamic and dark orchestral marches with broad use of percussion and an almost breathtaking and well portioned Heroig and mysticism.
Howards dosages are absolutely right. His music can sometimes nice quiet, mystical sound and lonely, sometimes combative and heroic - but without being cheesy. At first superficial Preview I missed a little bit the musical theme and missed by the catchy effect. But I recognized the second listening test. There is no melody that you can whistle in front of them, but it has a rather very corporeal and Atmospheric shape, because they are the element "water" again and make this music so intense, high contrast and vivid that the goose bumps effect will not fail. Namely this takes the audience frequently. Especially when the strings inserts eg the title "Flow Like Water" euphoric but sensitively kindle such a beauty which has hardly been in a musical so true. This music flows like water.
This is a masterpiece and joins with the major works of composers in the Top 5. These include: Snow Falling on Cedars, The Village, Signs, Unbreakable and even The Last Airbender.
It will probably be far more enthusiastic heart for "The Last Airbender", as disappointing (hence the score is meant). This soundtrack fills the heart of the listener. The Goldenglobe- and Oscar nomination for "Best Original Score" Howard has secured in my opinion already for next year. Good luck with it ;-)
Hear hear!
A great work!
