Focus difficulties at close range

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.4 g Lens (58mm filter thread) (Camera)

Customer Review

As with other lenses that I have reviewed, I can not judge this in three sets. Who reading so is too cumbersome, which should be satisfied with the reviews as "All the best".
The AF-S 50 1 / 1.4 G is now the sixth Nikon lens in my photo backpack and next to the AF-S DX 35 1 / 1.8 G, with whom I also want to compare it, and the AF-S DX 85 Macro my third fixed focal length. I Scan with the D5300 which a 24 MP APS-C sensor has, therefore equivalent focal length 75mm at my camera. This is a quite interesting angle for many applications because the subject corresponds to the viewfinder of size, how it perceives itself.
The reason for the purchase was for me in the first ways the currently favorable price for it here at Amazon (329 on 10.04.2015) foresight on a full-frame, for which I would then equal a normal focal length. As long as it should serve me as moderate tele focal length for landscapes, close-ups and portraits. Why did not I resorted to the cheaper 50mm 1 / 1.8G is not even the slightly higher light intensity, but the additional two diaphragm blades. The DX 35mm, like the 50mm 1 / 1.8G also seven diaphragm blades. When I look at the photos of my macro or efforts have been made by the AF-S 70-300 ED VR pictures, then I feel the bokeh lenses with nine diaphragm blades as significant quality gains that I did not want to miss.
The 50mm 1 / 1.4G surprised only once by his bulky weight. It's harder for its size than you would think and to my 35s a significant difference. The processing and the feel is better than my DX lenses, such as the 35s and the macro, the latter which is not much inferior (the lowcost products such as the 18-55 and the 55-200 can not be compared on the site). Clearly remember is that when you turn the focus ring. While the DX lenses offer little resistance and even has the 35er some backlash, runs the focus ring of 50 taut and clean. The focusing path is quite large, which I attribute to the shallow depth of field at maximum aperture. Hand can be so very accurate and precise focus, whatever is necessary at f 1 / 1.4 and comes to meet me much because I often losziehe with tripod and then also like to leave out the autofocus. However, the fine adjustment path is the reason for the rather cozy autofocus, as he is so often criticized here. True, the 50mm lens is also my slowest. However, it is in practice for most situations fast enough and if one keeps in mind that our cameras focus through the open aperture, then you know also why it takes at precisely this objective so long. In Aperture 1.4 is not really sharp, but you have to stop down more than two stages. The course also makes it difficult focusing and if you still think the only 5mm focus area at close range, one can only imagine that it is quite a challenge even for a good autofocus. Such aperture ratios is necessary to work very carefully, otherwise the picture is not worth anything.
That's my problem with it. The detailed pictures of close-ups to 1m were in my first 100 photos so that all together Committee, because the focus was too far behind the measuring field. Partially up to 2cm which extremely noticeable at wide-open aperture. When I aimed my cat on the nose, his neck fur was only sharp and blurred his face. For landscapes, in the distance, which I find so very impressive, a defocus of 1-2 cm is hardly noticeable, only for close-ups is the problem.
I do not belong to the people who order a lens online, test it briefly and then send back because they are not completely happy with it or it is their perception of quality does not do justice. For that I buy so Niko products and you should know beforehand what you want. But the moment I was able to understand very well because all my other lenses I gave much better results here. I made some test photos at close range (ruler asked about 45 ° against a wall, the camera on the tripod and the autofocus in individual field to a specific number focused ...) and the result was sobering. With increasingly shutter closed, the focus moves whopping 2cm backwards and I wanted badly suffered because so the lens for close-ups is useless. Fine tuning is available at the D5300 and not more than 2 cm is fine (another reason for a full-frame camera). Amazon immediately offered me a return with credit or repair. Since I probably would not get the lens to the price so quickly, I decided to repair the Nikon Service in Dresden. After three days I got back the lens and the next shots were a little better, but the problem persists. After some Internet research, I then found tests, the exact confirm this phenomenon. The Focus Shifts at close range at different apertures and only at a distance greater than 1 m then he sits. When the focus is seated, the results are very good. From Aperture 2.8, the edges of the subject are extremely sharp and by opening the aperture can dissolve the background completely, leaving only soft color schemes remain it. This creates otherwise only my macro, where the focus is, however, a little better. The contrast in color and brightness is very high, even better than my 35mm. The colors are authentic and come together with the high contrast out of there very realistic images, which are not to do with a kit lens so. Reworking such as shadow detail are here hardly necessary, but these high-intensity fixed focal lengths tend to tip more in bright sun lights and burned bodies than zoom lenses, which have a lower contrast. Chromatic aberration is unfortunately a subject at large apertures. Here the 50mm is a little more vulnerable than the DX 35, which bothers enlargements until neckline and is easily corrected by software. Moreover, this phenomenon is very dependent on the situation and negligible from Aperture 3.2. The sharpness and resolution are very good and on par with the 35s, maybe even a little better. In conjunction with the good sharpness and the large aperture plays from their advantage. For landscapes, in greater distances (because of me> 100m) and wide-open aperture blurred to nothing at shutter speeds of 1 / 1000s, and less, which is thus to make any problems even at low sensitivity of the sensor. And you get despite Largemouth quite sharp and detailed image, but must then take slight chromatic aberrations purchase. Stopping down you can work around that, the exposure times are getting longer but logically.
Since I have an APS-C sensor, the distortion and vignetting is with me so not an issue. Always adhere to in-camera distortion correction, since I also need at short focal lengths with the 18-55 or the 35s, with the 50mm I could but she confidently leave. This is because I use only the center of the lens and thus the optically best range of the lens with the small sensor. At an FX camera things may be different.
All in all, I'm not really satisfied with the purchase, because the quality difference to the DX 35mm is small and I can not use the lens for close-ups at close range, which are not a problem for my 35s (and the other Nikkor lenses). The picture quality is great, but in a normal focal length in the price range I expect to be able to make the ability close it. For carefree, quick snapshots from his hand the 50mm 1 / 1.8G may be the cheaper and better option, even for the fairly slow autofocus in 1 / 1.4 G.
