From Bach to Bernstein

Leonard Bernstein Edition - Concertos & Orchestral Works (CD)

Customer Review

In 2010 Sony was editing an indispensable LP Format box of 60 CDs, a Symphony Edition dedicated to one of the most emblematic leaders of his catalog: Leonard Bernstein. This year the publisher offers us more: a new box of 80 CDs grouping Columbia and CBS recordings of Lennie in the repertoire of concertos and symphonic music (excluding Symphonies, so), reflecting a musical bulimia covering so say all classical music from Bach to Bartok and Vivaldi or Ligeti, or the occasion should we rather say, Bach's music to Bernstein. We therefore find here almost everything Bernstein recorded on Concertos or symphonic pieces, with some works that present therefore find themselves several times. A true gold mine, with recordings that cover about a quarter century, mainly made with "his" New York Philharmonic.

Plenty of records in which it is also not always easy to navigate (see details below), especially since in this case the scheduling of works does not follow a strict concept. Still we can distinguish two main components: 1 to 28 CDs are essentially devoted to concertos, and 29 to 70 CDs devoted to orchestral works, each party evolving roughly in alphabetical order of composers. Finally, the last 10 CDs offer mixed albums, plus "thematic" (contemporary music, dances, marches).

The Art of Leonard Bernstein, is above all that of passion. The passion to transmit the joy of sharing, hard to communicate through music the emotions of his life. A tireless and charismatic leader who inspires an irresistible dynamic partitions, a natural excitement that arises from the apparent spontaneity of his reading. An electrifying reading, often spirited, always intense, sustained by an immanent lyricism, and illuminated a vital energy as if it arose from the wand of a wizard.

Bernstein conductor and composer left us there is almost a quarter century. But through his many recordings, Lennie the sorcerer always conveys his contagious passion: the magic of music.

Below is the detailed content of the box, grouped by composer to facilitate a little reading.
