Indeed, there are the so-called complete works, but to my knowledge the first time they are presented by opus number in chronological order of the compositions, the piano only distinguishing one hand and 'secondly orchestra. Thus, as regards the corpus for piano (9 discs), giving following the works by period and not by category (preludes, studies, sonatas, mazurkas, poems, etc., are no longer grouped guard -to you but still played in context, phew!), we create short recitals both varied and particularly consistent from the point of view of the composer's style. And this is a major key to finally understand his language in depth, as and extent of its creative evolution. When he is freed successively Chopin, the Russian tradition of rhythmic stress and tone, Scriabin done simultaneously in all the genres he is amazing (and gratifying) to the listener feel so much a creation on. Early works (without opus number) are also present, with some unpublished, recorded here for the first time.
For the orchestra, it is also the most complete collection ever offered these works. Symphonies, Concerto, Poems, everything is there, with minor rarities (chamber music, collective work with other Russian composers, etc.) and even the hypothetical reconstruction by Alexander Nemtin the three parts of the prior act of "Final Mystery ", long unavailable record (3 CD).
Nothing wrong (if not good!) The interpretation, reference mix versions and new versions, in a beautiful sound quality. They are usually flawless, from various sources, it seems the best for each work (let us leave open all possible discussions about it ...). As was already the case with Decca Rachmaninov, Vladimir Ashkenazy appears as the center of gravity of a set which is very open to many other performers, illustrious (Pogorelich, Richter, Gergiev, Maazel, etc.) or less known ( see full track-listing and performers below).
Obviously, Michael Ponti, Maria Lettberg Vladimir Sofronitzky and other major scriabiniens yesterday and today (Setrak, Arodaky, Amoyel, Taub, Rudy, Hamelin, etc.) are not disqualified by this issue - how it could it be possible? - And it will always come back to them and wait for new settlers. But this near-perfect realization (it is not quite) of the complete works is now the indispensable basis for any follower of Scriabin's unique.
The booklet of 82 pages (including the binding alas eats margins printed inside pages) is illustrated with many photos of the performers, it gives details of all the records (with some serious errors of timing and attention) and includes a brief but very relevant - it's rare enough to be stressed - introduction, signed Hugh Macdonald (8 pages, also in French). Specialists may refer to the monographs published by Actes Sud Fayard or to read more.
Too bad that, in the case of a cabinet dedicated to a composer so attentive to aesthetics, the colors and the cross between the arts, design is so poor with the same poor reproduction of a portrait of Scriabin to recovery the same on 18 cardboard sleeves ... It's a visual effect disastrous but trivial about the musical content, I want to admit.
