Installing both Linux and Windows is easy. One can actually save the entire Management Software that can also be configured through a web interface own the device.
The printed image is very good, fine resolution and one sees no fringes or similar .. However, you should even bother to calibrate the colors. The results were initially both the direct copying and the pressure a bit too dark and drifting slightly from the red to me.
Scan and fax functions such as one would expect. The TWAIN module on Windows tries for my taste a little too much automatic "optimization". But you can also wean him and for the "average user" does that quite well.
Two little things there are, however, to complain:
1. You can not scan directly to a network share, but the scans only on Windows to a background service "push", which then puts them in a directory or e-mailed on.
Here you can help yourself by putting a memory card in the device and directly on scans. You can then access via SMB on this card.
2. For incoming faxes you only have the option to print them directly or to be forwarded to a different fax. Forwarding e-mail or call the faxes received via PC is not provided even though the device has even extra flash memory for faxes. Could also email the device actually, at least you can let send status / event mails.
The follow-up costs should not ignore it, because the device itself is quite cheap attempt to make HP the toner winning. A complete set of toner costs about 220, - for 2200 b / w and 1400 color pages.
For low-volume (100-200 pages per month) but that's my opinion reasonable.
