The Diviners (Hardcover)

Customer Review

Bray, Libba The Diviners

What's the matter?

Evie O'Neill is too large for the small town in which she grew up. It is too big for the people who do not understand them there and so it is that she is exiled to a small "incident" to her Uncle Will to New York. Her uncle is a professor and holds a Museum of Supernatural in the city. Evie enjoying with their new girlfriends Mabel and theta the wild party life of the 20s, to a cruel murder calls for her uncle and she throws herself in the middle of the investigation work. The killer seems to have supernatural powers, but also can see Evie memories that remain on an object liable. And she's not the only one with a supernatural gift ...

Writing style

Libba Bray manages to create a dark, eerie atmosphere with their writing style, as well as the style of writing the reader added directly into the New York of the 20's. A beautifully written book with many small details. So Evie depends, for example, frequently even a -Ski at the end of a sentence or emphasized her words with a "positivist-tute-ly", so that you look at it as a reader caught, how to take their "ticks". In English, it's definitely not a beginner book, fortunately there is this month appeared in German!

My Opinion

The Diviners felt very at most. You know by now that I love it when books trigger in me feelings or they can put me in a certain atmosphere and that is this book definitely succeeded.

Especially the setting was able to convince me. I'm not as familiar with the 20s, but series or books set in this period can, always carried away. Judging whether Libba Bray has worked historically accurate or not, so I can not, but because of their epilogue, I assume that it has given a lot of effort in researching. And it shows. The New York of the 20s is glamorous, skin tones are still separated, clubs and theaters are something special and sometimes even illegal, for some parties required to invitations and secret code words, women wear elegant dresses, headdresses and Bobfrisuren and of course the obligatory pearl necklaces and all Time has to be heard as a reader feel the music of the night by the book.

The places where the killer comes into appearance, are terribly dark and sinister, always with you fear as a reader, as if you were watching a movie, in which you just waiting for one startled.

Not only the setting, but also the characters were convincing along its entire length. Diviners are a group of people with different gifts, some of them tell some passages from their point of view, so are also protagonists, in some it is not sure whether they really have a gift. But all the characters are created with great attention to detail, all have a background story, the one part is yet to come on the ropes.

Ever leaves The Diviners on so many questions for the subsequent volumes that I can already hardly wait until finally the next part will appear. This book was clearly just the beginning, among many dark hint is particularly noticeable that there is a reason why the Diviners emerge right now. The time is now, it is not only in the penultimate chapter, and one wonders what purpose will really meet the Diviners.

What I sometimes not so well-liked, were the sometimes very detailed explanations that were not quite as easy to understand in English. So at the moment I still feel that I did not understand everything, but maybe that is also by design. Bad it is not in any case, because I am sure that the second part will bring more light into the darkness.

And another tip for those who are at the Frankfurt Book Fair: Libba Bray is also there and signed their books on Saturday, October 11 from 14: 15-14: 45 clock in Hall 4.1 at Stand D72.

Conclusion

A great book with everything your heart desires: a great setting, a little love, a lot of action and adventure, a large pinch of Supernatural and of course the horror on the doorstep. I am thrilled and can highly recommend it to you. Let me know if you have loved it as much as I do!
