1) The material smells bad, and it will avoid putting the cover in direct contact with clothes in a suitcase.
2) The hull is rigid but is not padded everything, so it's a bit like an egg carton wedged in a rigid package. If you drop it off, the box of eggs or the disc case would certainly be protected, but I'm not sure as eggs or the internal mechanics of the disk would be spared.

In short, the perfect cover for my Seagate was thinner, with a semi-rigid shell and padded, and has not manifested his presence by his scent.
So far, traveling, I used a thick winter socks (double thickness thanks to folding) to coat this type of drive: this is not bulkier than the cover, protection is padded, and it does not feel bad! I wanted to test a less MacGyver solution, the result did not really convinced.
