Never in my long life, NEVER EVER did it happen that I have a work three times continuously read consecutively. Why has so captivated me this book, a psychologist could clarify. Maybe a mix of their own experiences and the current world situation. I was born in November 1944 during a bombing raid, have thus consciously seen the destruction and aftermath of the war and as a young man noticed the Hungarian Revolution and the Prague Spring from a distance of a few kilometers. First I noticed the many parallels to the current situation: governments shoot at its own citizens, governments send their own troops in dangerous missions in order to consolidate their power or economy. Suzanne Collins manages a masterly portrayal of psychological states and changes of their main characters, the rollercoaster of emotions, the inability ever to overcome severe trauma again. Both Haymitch Abernathy in and to the rest of the winners can be seen that they have never really won. The author also avoids any black and white drawing, none is all good or all evil. Of the many key scenes I want to particularly mention two, the one in which Katniss realizes that living under a fascist President Coin would be marked by retribution and co-ordination and, returning to the Buttercup. Katniss is first angry, but then she realizes unconsciously that this cat is the last thing that is left of her prim, and that he has the love of Prim and hoping to see her again, made incredible exertions. In love with her sister she finds a kindred spirit and is now breaking its hard shell. Only then they can try to take life again. There is no happy ending, because the past can not be erased. But man finds a way to survive. My review is from the original text.
