The Mystery of Life (Audio CD)

Customer Review

My second thought was, I admit it: "That'll be fun." I thought in the middle on the first track, "The Greatest Cowboy of Them All" - the start promising, incl ironic "Bonanza" quote, and then breaks storm like Anita Carter ethereal sound is forming one-woman background choir in ....

But there has to by one; then it gets better. And the new recording of "Hey Porter" some tracks later is really fine, with boom-chicka-boom and much else Drive. Old cash qualities, and whoever is responsible for the distinctive bass lines in the crowd of sideman (Jimmy Tittle?) - It's worth the money. For another remake, "Wanted Man" is true only with limitations: Who knows the song from "San Quentin" album, might in any case get moist eyes: Why had cash dismantle his own memorial? Sure, the new version is not bad, also schnörkelt not, and a good guitarist they have back - but the result sounds sterile, definitely any, does not have the character of gloriously filthy anno dunnemals.

Ever this album is tricky: When one thinks, now puts cash in old freshness going, you get quite often one on the lid. For example, even with "Beans for Breakfast". As cash only came up with the idea this song like "All together now" having to bring entertainer? Which producer gave him the only go through ?! (. It was a rhetorical question Jack Clement more surprising.) Similarly dispensable "The Hobo Song" - ie, the song is nice, has something touchingly old-fashioned se, and the star-studded background chorus fits here. But it lacks that certain something; no idea what exactly that would have to exist here, but it is missing.

Nevertheless, the old saying holds true, according to which there is no cash-album on which not one or the other would be hidden pearl. Here you can hear one of the pearls in the name of "Goin 'by the Book", even if the package is a little bit overloaded (what are these blowers in the background when the foreground of Lead guitarist playing so fine things and the blues has?). Convince two or three other songs: Hey Porter Besides these are the straight Rockabilly "I'm an Easy Rider" or the cozy, country-ballad "I'll Go Somewhere and Sing My Songs Again" (with Tom Hall, only I thought it was Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard in personal union). The title track and "Angel and the Badman" also belong to the positives of the album, typical cash-Country Songs halt. Somehow you will indeed not escape the impression that to have heard on other, earlier Cash albums, but so be it.

However, it says a lot about this album that be great dazzling highlight - in addition to the new recording of "Hey Porter" - calculated the bonus track "The Wanderer" has the cash in 1993 recorded with U2 (on " Zooropa "). A fine song, straightforward and with restrained dynamics, tailored to cash while U2 make as excellent companion volume - not least because The Edges gloomy guitar runs and Adam Clayton's bass haunting. Too bad that no longer have recorded together ... They would then have the album title can in fact better understand.
