Customer Review

To appreciate this book must be known at least the history of Ireland. You should know that Ireland is a divided country: the South and the North who have experienced a long civil war between those who want to keep their British identity and those who want a free Ireland (a republic). According to sources, between a third and half the population of the island is massacred by Cromwell's army in the 17th century. After his defeat, Ireland is subject to the authority and laws of England and the lands are confiscated and assigned to colonists from England. Since then, the north is fiercely fighting to dismiss the occupant English. Most are descendants of English Protestant while the strain of Irish are (but not all) of catholics. The story takes place in the second half of the 1960s to the present day when the Republican (IRA) are raised for civil rights. They are against sectarian segregation suffered by the Catholic minority. It is in this atmosphere of violence that the narrator tells his story: caught between a rock and a hard place, it becomes, despite himself, a traitor. The story is written without misery and is not devoid of poetry, despite the economy vocabulary. A good book. To read.
