The IdeaPad S400U to score with a 24GB SSD hard drive, which is to serve as a cache to speed up the system. To this end, Intel Rapid Storage Technology must be installed and configured. And here's the reason for my 4 star deduction.
The SSD is precisely configured upon delivery (at least on the equipment acquired by me) NOT as a cache. From an acceleration can of course be no question.
Here is an excerpt of the technology description of Intel:
"Fast access to the most frequently required files and applications
The Intel Smart Response Technology is a feature of the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (Intel RST) [. Automatically detects which files and applications you use most frequently and saves them on a high-performance SSD. At the same time it offers you full access to the larger storage capacity of a hard drive. In this way you can use a cheaper SSD with low storage capacity in conjunction with a high-capacity hard disk. Thanks to Intel Smart Response Technology Your system offers faster performance than a system that is equipped only with a hard disk "(Source: [...]).
Ok that the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (hereinafter referred to as IRST) is not installed upon delivery, I might still be dubbed when the subsequent install would it have been possible. Unfortunately, I was blessed here with various error messages, as I also explained in the German Forum of Lenovo ([...]) and asked for help. Unfortunately, within the last few days no answer.
My mail with instructions of misconfiguration on the German Lenovo address [email protected] was answered to contact the telephone support with the request.
So I called today during telephone support
01805 366 869 (Land line price: 14 ct / min; mobile price max 42 ct / min.) In from 09:00 clock - 17:00 clock
and since I have indeed requires strong nerves. After believe the matter of the non-existent acceleration only not really (or even understand) wanted, they wanted to me indeed a 0190 (!) Report number, their employees should then deal with the technical details. Of course, I was flabbergasted, because after all the fault lies so on misconfigured laptop or at the non-current software advertised ISRT.
I am now so remained that the friendly staff of Lenovo forwards my case to the technology and then phone me logs within the next 3 (!) Days.
I find it on my part really a pity that due to a defective quality management (one can a laptop sometimes check before delivering it or even check the image to be loaded onto the hard drive) is a great product to deteriorate unnecessarily again in retrospect ,
My conclusion: I find the laptop as such (it is really very easy and pleasant to use, even without SSD already not toooo slow) really class. However, the misconfiguration on delivery I find a disaster. As one would have the SSD can completely save and it would not have made the slightest difference. Apart from the response time in the Lenovo Forum and also the support is wanting in its attempt aufschwatzen me a 0190 number is anything but a high-quality support.
I would love to know, of course - before the unit returns to Amazon - whether the acceleration work with the IRST with other buyers. Here I was now pointing out that the installation of IRST works properly in others. Probably I have a Monday device. In this respect, I will revise my review following receipt of the new device again.
If the support and report the problem to be solved to my satisfaction, I will like to increase the number of stars again. But for now I am disappointed and here is then, subjectively, 1 star enough.
UPDATE: Meanwhile, I have now returned to the unit and get a new one. Unfortunately, nothing is on the correct configuration to see. IRST is not installed and the subsequent installation aborts with an error message. The technical support has not contacted me and my forum was not answered.
I will now indeed keep the laptop probably, but my vote is due to poor configuration and the lack of support. These are probably the disadvantages which you may save with the low price. At a later date, I will replace the hard drive completely through a "large" SSD, so I no longer need the cache.
Update 5.8.13: Have the (second) IdeaPad now but returned because I still noticed that the front left corner of approximately 0.5 cm is away from the table with the fold open display. These were too many negative points too quickly for me. I have now for the Acer Timeline Ultra M3-481T-53314 for purchasing 444 € (not available on Amazon). Schade Lenovo.
