I had long Nikkor 70-300mm the VRII along with the D300 and was not dissatisfied at least in the range 70-200. Did not bother me mainly the harsh bokeh, but what do you expect for just under 600 euros already. In May, I acquired the D800E and had to make the experience that consumer Teles just yet not come to the image quality of (quality) fixed focal length; there is a clearly visible difference. I fotographiere much in the area 70-200, I have long struggled with me, whether the high additional cost of 70-200 2.8 VRII is warranted by a better image quality (which one can imagine not just at 100% Pixelpeeping in direct comparison ). And indeed: The lens is in a whole different league as the consumer Teles (I for example: even the 16-85 VRII from Nikon). First, the super-fast AF is more precise, resulting in absolutely clear images in the middle screen area already at full aperture. Secondly, the colors more appealing and clearly the bokeh are much better. For portraits, for example, the hair looks at the mass market products (Kitlenses) Nikon easily "glued" or somehow hard out. This pro-Zoom against you would not get the idea that there could be problems. Processing / haptics are top notch. Who can afford it, should get yourself one. It will be perhaps longer can enjoy off than the savings Euros ....
