For what does not yet know the characters, I strongly advice to read the first volume of their adventure: "One last drink before the war," because it's already a damn good book, and because, even if not reading it does not bother understanding this second adventure, the book teems with reference to the first and it allows us to understand so much more intimate reactions of the characters.
Because one of the strong point of this series is undoubtedly his characters. The narration in the first person of course definitely helps upon submersion and the psychological dimension of this thriller. But genius is based on the character of Kenzie, a dark and cynical desire that distills a humor hilarious, if you'll pardon the expression. Characters drool but clings, and episode full of humanity. While the plot of the first book was good, but not necessarily original point BE a real strength for the book, that of "Darkness take my hand" is simply amazing, taking its value in novel environments.
I suggest you all heart this novel, just excellent, entertaining, funny and incredibly dark and touching ... just perfect!
