Still very alert for his age, Allan Karlsson, former Artificer by trade, lives in a retirement home. On the day of its centenary, he hastily decided to run away by jumping out the window to escape the ceremony in his honor. Here he finds himself at the station, in slippers. He bought a ticket to an uncertain destination and will soon realize that he flew on a whim, a huge suitcase coveted by the gang of "never again". Allan may well be very elderly and crippled with rheumatism, has always been kind of lucky in life and will meet colorful characters who will help him throughout the novel ... The crazy part, the rhythm imposed by the run, characters and many twists I liked. But he missed a je ne sais quoi to be completely conquered, perhaps because of the construction of the novel: the narrative is interspersed with outstanding episodes in the life of Allan, oh how significant since, as Bomb, he crossed all the great politicians of the twentieth century. I found these less original parts, too repetitive and especially "parachute." 3 stars therefore, say 4 by including coverage that is particularly successful. The old man who did not celebrate his birthday remains a good book to read to lay your head and I'm curious to see the adaptation to be proposed to the movies.
