That it is Apache Air Assault not a simulation really did not care because I make fun and action flight games with a joystick / push control and TrackIR system. Both are supported by the game, in which it took a while for me, my Saitek X52 Pro in the Options menu set. The "default" settings were completely useless, when rolling to the left of the helicopter tilted his nose ...
The first mission then instantly Action standard fare. You have to defend a base against onrushing opponent and somehow arises immediately feel a that you have all seen many times.
Mission Technically, we go so on, sometimes time-critical (protect from friendly units, destroying enemy objects, etc.) and usually just to ground.
If everything is not that bad, if only I did not constantly feel would have to play "Wings of Prey". And for me that is the biggest drawback of the game, it does not feel like a helicopter game on. Everything that makes helicopters battle, as low as possible and slowly fly to be quickly prepared for any eventuality, is neither required nor supported by the game here.
A collection of opponents plops mostly on the distance of 2-3km front player. If you are not hiding just behind one of the very few hills not considered sightlines. A few seconds after "aufploppen" the enemy troops take it off the player helicopter under fire ... with everything they have to offer. Also provides a true infantry ammunition rain, of course, while they back up eat perching on pick-up trucks or boats.
If a hill is nearby, you might disappear behind, but what absolutely no advantage. Once you hervorlukt by helicopter just 1cm, it rains once again lead. If you descend below tree level also does not interfere with the opponents on, only the AI-controlled helicopter draw the enemy fire on himself (against which they are fortunately far as possible immune) and let the player then times advance halfway tactically.
And then it's time for the only new aspect: With the infrared vision forwardly take individual vehicles and soldiers under fire, even if they are hiding somewhere behind objects.
But it works only when the AI opponents are distracted by anything, because otherwise you are under constant attack and has not the time for such surgical procedures.
And that brings me to the biggest motivation inhibitors in this game: to act instead of just frantically trying as befits a helicopter pilot and glide from cover to cover, to do it better and easier as Luke Skywalker in the battle for the Death Star and hurtles full speed over the opponent away, unmotivated ballert a few rockets in their direction and leaves the rest to the gunners who fought automatically objectives.
I have now tried several times, but to act differently, but it always comes to the same end also: Augen zu und durch.
And I find that very sad ... and therefore the comparison with "Wings of Prey" from the same manufacturer. Even with HAWX it did not mind, just square to fly and to press the fire button, but in a helicopter game, I expect just that the game design is adapted.
I prefer to not draw the comparison with simulations, but when "DCS: Black Shark" pure flying alone is exciting. My Vorrezensent spoke to the comparison with the old "Comanche", I must say that one could often run for cover there and had to consider an approach to the target area.
With one card to play in the mountains, all the others are settled on mostly flat terrain, so it does not matter from where you attack or how to approach their destination. No matter which opponent, all shoot off immediately and force the player by the wildly shooting frontal attack move.
Graphically much less variety is offered as in "Wings of Prey", other than the Apache, you can still play in online missions to Hind and a drone.
The cockpit instruments are just decoration and can not be manipulated. Hellfire missiles function as fire-and-forget missiles, you need to obtain no target lock upright. All ammunition charges during the flight back on and never goes out.
Multiplayer games run at the moment only as a co-op mode to one of the single-player maps. So far I only had a lucky escape and came across two other players, but that's probably only fun if you and with each other is talking on headset, otherwise it is believed that it is merely KI colleagues at the colleagues and thinks you are playing a single player Mission.
Unfortunately, there is at the time of this review no demo for the PC otherwise I would really recommend to look at these times in advance. Who the gameplay is fun or not so often games in the nature has played, does not go far wrong with Apache Air Assault. For all others who had perhaps hoped for more of this title shall apply either completely suspend or wait for it comes to the budget price.
