Helmut Walchas recording of Bach's Art of Fugue on the Schnitger organ of Sint-Laurens-Kerk at Alkmaar in 1956 is the oldest stereo recording for Deutsche Grammophon ever and ever memorable as such. Walcha was famous for the audibility of his game, in which each voice even the most intricate polyphony received her adequate articulation. That's why listening to the high polyphony this last great Bach's work in Walchas own transfer for organ worth here especially. The remaining space on CD 2 is filled by three major organ works of Bach, including the in my opinion best interpretation of the "epidemic" Toccata in D minor. Incomprehensible nevertheless remains why one could not decide, firstly, after canceling the final fugue Bach's "death-chant" "Before your throne I now appear" should be added, as Walcha did in his concerts, and secondly, the unfinished Contrapunctus 18 in Walchas own perfection and performance should increase. Who wants to hear these pieces should purchase Walchas Bach complete recording, which is to have very low relative.
