Much soul, gospel and plenty of Groove

Clear, is the soul. Even really retro excessive. Originally released in early as the summer of 2012, Domino Records delights us now across the pond with the very successful Debüalbum of long-haired, bearded Matthew E. White. On the cover and other photos, he looks more like a lumberjack from the northern forests, which perhaps makes some nerdy freak folk and not as a gifted songwriter and arranger wonderful soul numbers.
The blue-eyed country soul with not croonigen voice could appear early 70s of the last millennium, and not until-2013.

With its marvelous brass, strings, choir and an excellent rhythm section gospelt and White Soult by its 7 beautiful songs. Through his jazz background always for a surprise or two good (eg the sudden onset jazzy groove in "Hot Toddies") he breaks taditionelle structures and makes the whole thing very exciting and unusual.

Very touching is including "Gone Away" over the death of his his four-year cousin, who died in a car accident ("I do not want to live a minute longer than you / So let's meet the Lord together").

And when the lines "Jesus Christ is our Lord / Jesus Christ he is your friend", which is actually not so are on my wavelength in the final fevered "Brazos", repeated mantra-like me does not remain other choice than all the weapons of defense to stretch and me this moment and Groove surrender.

It needs a few runs, but it is clear: all great soulful debut album. Despite not classic soul vocal voice.

PS: Uh, where the estimated "I Am Kloot" in it will be here for me is completely in the dark. And: The "dear people of the professional editor front" as far as I have they have read all right. An album that consists of much more than a voice.
