Not an unqualified success

The almost unanimous chorus cheering on the new Birdy album I can not connect, even at the risk, here mightily to a beating and get dislikes. But as Birdy fan of the first hour I am rather disappointed by their second album. I've encountered already 2 years ago on their outstanding Skinny Love cover and at their first concert outside Britain has me Birdy with her band completely thrilled, just like the first album on which she has mostly played cover versions. But the magic of this great start album, which is now no longer to be felt on several tracks from the new album.

What has identified the magic of their previous songs? Outstanding Birdy is always with the slow ballads when her delicate, slightly brittle voice can be heard in quiet passages and the piano so feelingly the right notes them to controls is really an excellent pianist! Then the next moment continue with powerful voice and piano chords. All their strengths are best observed in my opinion in Skinny Love. The grandiose cello player who has accompanied her at the studio recordings and live, has contributed significantly to this warm atmospheric music.

On the new album, however, so much has been sanded smooth towards the Mainstreampop, with a few exceptions. Dynamics in the songs: usually nil. Instead of the great cello (except for Words As Weapons) there are often strings and inserts synth passages from the computer.

The first song Wings is somewhat overproduced toward bombast, but is probably so for sure end up in the charts. In Light Me Up to Birdy tried with limited success to a number electropop. The same age Lorde from New Zealand dominates this profession but better classes. And anyway, for the fast tracks on the new album her voice is rather mediocre suitable. Why Birdy for not focusing on the skills that will make them stand out from all the others? In the field of pop music, I have no 15-year-old almost hear piano playing, as Birdy on their first album. Such pieces as Skinny Love and Shelter, where Birdy accompanies herself alone at the piano, and that have been the absolute creeps numbers for me, I miss a few exceptions.

The highlights at Fire Within are for me: No Angel, Shine, Dream and Words As Weapons. In these numbers the producer had to with all his studio equipment to back off times and already successful the best pieces in this album. This proves: Birdy so it can still - even with their own compositions. If she had an album released with these 4 pieces and Wings, as well as a handful of other cover songs, then it would again become an outstanding album, which would have been happy all. But she and her producer who probably wanted too much at once.

Who looks Birdy playing the piano in his eyes, sees this passion for music burning in her. That's why I still believe firmly that it creates in the coming years to take the largest own thing, which is all of us chip away completely again, as has been the case with Birdy I. So I forgive than a grade 3+. A Totalverriß their new album would be unfair to this lovely exceptional talent.
