X-Men III: The Last Stand (The Last Stand) (Audio CD)

Customer Review

What made for a trip the X-Men series alone in the first 3 parts, is impressive. It all started with Michael Kamen's often under-appreciated soundtrack for the first part, which has a nice mix between the orchestra and electronics supplied. John Ottman chose a modern approach and delivered a total of good work for the second part. Versed in Hollywood sound with some beautiful moments, but not an unqualified success.

For the third installment of the series John Powell was committed, who brought a very good reputation and a lot of experience in different genres.
The continuity has suffered unfortunately under the constant change of the composers and also with Powell disappears much of what you have musically associated with the X-Men. Could the film series so the third attempt finally all the potential to exploit what she is? The answer can only be YES (at least in terms of music)

X-Men The Last Stand is a fantastic soundtrack from start to finish

After a mysterious beginning in 20 jears ago the new main theme is directly introduced in the second piece. It is similar to that held by Ottman, but a trace bigger and faster, a bit more power and a total of really strong. The chorus is used early in the album very offensive and the tracks take very fast ride on. Even pieces with little motifs and themes are varied and keep the listener always tense. Ideas of Kamen and Ottman only be used in approach, repeatedly hinted but never written out completely. Overall, every character gets his own touch to the music.

With Whirlpool of Love is then for the first time the Phoenix theme heard and it is incredibly great. A melody that is simultaneously sublime and beautifully tragic, romantic and hopeful, all showing what Powell can put into his music. In Dark Phoenix Tragedy it comes backed by a fast drum rhythm and choir to contribute properly. The Funeral is another beautiful piece, very quiet and between all the action a necessary break.

From here to the chaos begins. Action music so good it just goes, gripping and multi-faceted, varied and full of themes and motifs. All this takes place from the great Cure Wars until the finale in Phoenix Rises. Powell donated his action material several topics and world class plays with the orchestra. Hard metal sounds, fast strings and trumpets are the main protagonists, to a chorus that goes up to the extreme and always great melodies and motifs. It is not the usual epic mash but perfectly-composed film music to the limits of exaggeration goes. Powell pulls out all the stops and has never delivers in his career.

Completed the album with the play The Last Stand is what next to the great main theme that offers a bit quieter passages.

Conclusion: All you had hoped and more. John Powell is the series the force and momentum it needs and provides great themes and unleashed Action music. Sometimes a little too much of a good showing this album as well Powell is and provides a blast from. Each piece is worth listening to in its own way, close to perfection.
