It is a laborious courtroom novel, quite agreed, very flat, no real twists.
It must be said that this character Mickey Haller has little for him. It is very bland, his personality does not awaken sympathy, ethics is a variable geometry, and apart from his ex-wife prosecutor, the characters that revolve around him are not the most endearing.
So if the author has more than one trick up his sleeve and a knowledge undeniable, this criminal case under background of financial crisis and foreclosures seemed very low. The conclusion is both predictable and disappointing.
And this is not the indigent translation overtaking all. This is the first time I read a book "pocket book" which proofreading / correction is catastrophic: it lacks words in shambles, there are dozens of phrases, especially in dialogues, almost incomprehensible due their construction or their heaviness. Unheard of.
Fortunately, the two books published thereafter (Those who fall and The Black Box) are much better level and revive the real series of the author, that of Harry Bosch.
