In the idyllic Kremsmünster was founded ten years ago a quartet of 14- and 15-year-olds, the 'picture book' called and 2009 on an indie rock label released their debut album CLOVES & Shillings. Six years later, and after a few line-up changes the twentysomethings Maurice Ernst apply (vocals, guitar), Peter Horažďovský (bass), Michael Krammer (guitar) and Philip Scheibl (Drums) as the next very big thing.
The culprit is next to singles like "paddling", "Om" or the divine "Maschin" especially their latest, third album SCHICK SHOCK, not just a sensational number 1 gave the band in their home country, but also in this country out of nothing shot up to # 14.
To describe the sound of a picture book on SCHICK SHOCK as eclectic, would be almost an understatement. The boys make use primarily in the anemic funk pop of Prince and the wild style mishmash its 'big brother' Falco, as well as traces of the Neue Deutsche Welle to rap and hard rock can be found. Some guitar solos strip the edge of annoying ("Plansch (!)" Roses for ceiling ").
Although they come from Austria and for years now live in the capital, however, is not even an idea of the typical Viennese humor in them something. And that is not just because her blonde frontman Maurice Ernst, who sings in a completely accent-free High German, but on the whole, opulent production of the album, which could be just as well arisen in Hamburg, Frankfurt or London because of me. Even in their texts prevails almost without exception before a large, neon subject illuminated, but by no means unsympathetic Nothing.
The first impression of two, three catchy songs and nine or ten extraneous appendages evaporates with each new listening test. You can especially once to distinguish the pieces apart and then realizes at some point that each of them has its own character. What you however consistently lacking, are the heart and soul as well as a certain life experienced depth. In this area, the Boys have deficits, but in five years should probably be quite different.
The two LPs of the vinyl edition (180 g) show some visible streaks, which, however, affects only a little in the empty slots. Otherwise, the sound is impeccable. A card with the download code for the MP3 version is included. This sounds full and balanced; no trace of the infamous 'Loudness War'. In particular bassist Horažďovský shines again with impressive coolness, where it comes very accommodating deep emphasized production. The Bürscherl has talent.
Conclusion: This band will soon be making even better albums and be really big. And her career Kickstarter SCHICK SHOCK is a gold shiny Pralinenschachterl whose content despite a certain sugar surplus and a lack of really nutritious ingredients ultimately tastes quite leiwand. ;-)
