Some scenes are completely unjustified and in the end we are left with a big frustration.
The icing on the cake: a little dubious ideology happens to be a fly in the soup at the end of the novel (which refers to a current conflict and takes a clear stance by removing any shade). Dan Simmons was obviously marked by September 11, but the conclusions he draws are much disappointed me.
