I can still clearly remember the beginning of 1990, when many here acclaimed LP "Violator" was released. Those who had hoped the entire album is so poppy as the second single "Enjoy the Silence", complained afterwards too Gitarrengeschrammel on the plate and a departure from the usual synthetic DM sound. The transfiguring effect of nostalgia glasses makes "Violator" but apparently to the DM-super album.
15 years later a new chart compatible Synthpopsingle "Precious" by DM appears in the style of "Enjoy the Silence" and it's the same game as before. There are many parallels between the two albums. Both include consistently excellent timeless pieces that slowly but powerfully burrow into the ear, touching the soul. All tracks are unique and interpret atmospheric DM-sound in their own way. Nothing is redundant.
Even though my favorite is still "Some Great Reward" and "Black Celebration" hot, I find "Playing the Angel" very successful. Except for "Macro" for me there is no real weak points on the board. After stringing together trivial schmaltz, paradoxically called "Exciter" I had such a strong part is no longer expected. Very good: "The pain did I used to," "John The Revelator", "Precious", "I Want It All". Simply brilliant: "Nothing's impossible"! My compliments to Dave Gahan. Deep black depression that really rocks! 5 stars from me!
If Depeche Mode in 15 years "Exciter 2" throw to the market, I am looking forward to the reviews, will be read in the, what a masterpiece "Playing the Angel" was ...
