Canon PowerShot G7 Digital Camera X (20.2 megapixels, 4.2x opt. Zoom, WiFi, NFC) (Electronics)

Customer Review

After a long search and wait for new models, I have decided for the G7 X as a really high-quality compact (!) Camera. First I had to wait for a successor to the Nikon Coolpix P7800, but it did not come so far. As successor to the Panasonic Lumix LX7 and respected by the outstanding image quality probably LX100 is unfortunately a tad more too large, the focal length a little short, and a built-in flash would have not hurt either. Overall, the excellent SONY would RX100 far been the best choice, but somehow I did not want to ...

After publication of the G7 X was quite clear that they would be there, even if it does not meet my expectations 100%.

Objective criteria G7 X vs. RX100 for me were:
++ Brighter lens with longer focal length (90mm vs. 70mm KB-equivalent)
+ More and easy-to-reach manual controls
+ A not entirely insignificant price difference
- The EVF of the RX100 I would also like to
Then of course, the personal Markenperzeption plays a role ...
From the picture quality probably play both cameras in the same league, but an informed and detailed statement I would like to leave to the experts in various test.
That the Sony will have when it comes to movies in the lead, is irrelevant for my purposes. The Canon can a lot more than I need, is to use entirely for good movies.

It would be futile to list the features and functions of the camera here. She has much more and can be a lot, and I'm sure that I'll only actually use over the years a part of it. Instead, I want the couple a few points mentioned, where it would have something more or different may include:

- As I said above, an EVF would be great. But I hope that even in unfavorable light to get to the really good display to make ends meet and the EVF will not miss too often.

- The fact that the camera does not have a panorama feature, I could not believe at first. Although came only from time to time used, would life but then significantly facilitate (rather than manual AE-L / AF-L, the capture of a possible well-mount Series without optical assistance and finally assembling the individual images in Photoshop, which already many prevented beautiful panoramas). Here comes yet even more difficult, and AE-L AF-L only fiddly keyboard shortcuts or the reprogramming of the ring Funct. and Movie buttons are reached.

- The camera is compact, but still large enough for the (assisted) one-hand operation. So luckily no camera, you must keep as a small smartphone between splayed fingers. For a truly stable one-hand operation but lacks clearly an ergonomic handle, which would affect the format of the camera barely negative (the lens is in any case a long way out). I have resorted me with the Flipbac G2 adhesive grip which makes things much better, but not really well.

- That the display can be swiveled upwards for me was absolute must (more for macros and Hüftschüssen as for Selfies, but for whom it is also very convenient). Schön would have been if it can be pivoted also down (as in the SONY), as a workaround you can set the camera but also pivoted up display upside down. Even better would have been if you can fold down the display completely, so it is well protected for transportation (such as in the Coolpix).

- The battery does not last too long. In order not often "blind" to stand there, you have a little households - and most always carry a charged spare battery with you. In this case, the separate charger turns (it no longer belongs to all cameras) to be advantageous because a battery can store, while using the camera.

- A GPS module would have been a nice gimmick, but with the battery probably a killer.

- A physical manual that you can take as a reference sometimes, instead of an unnecessary "Getting Started in 47 languages" booklet would have been very happy. Some functions of the camera open up only with the manual, which can download times than 202 sites in 22 MB PDF with Canon. If you want to print something and not really as good for the pocket reference then either. I have already clearly seen worse, but also the quality of content and readability / comprehensibility of Canon PDF manual can to be desired ...

The processing and image quality of the camera have me but so far convinced their speed. I would just call the camera compact, but it has been in volume (esp. By sweeping the lens) and also their weight.
The brightness of the lens / sensor combination really surprised me. Even in really low light the camera takes decent pictures that are not distorted by flashlight. The flash is probably rarely need to turn up out of the woodwork.

CONCLUSION:
Overall a clear recommendation, if you want a high quality and just compact camera with great features and manifold Einstellmöglichen for Move, puts on a bright optics with a relatively large focal length range value, may waive the EVF, the second battery factored equal, Movies not highest priority, panorama rather irrelevant and GPS does not matter.

Supplement for more than 2 weeks of intensive use and more than 1,000 photographs (and, unfortunately, a number of battery charges):

First of all, my above-described first impressions on the whole have been confirmed. A couple of points I want to but had another highlight:

Lens
Over the longer focal length compared to the Sony RX100 III I'm pretty happy, I often used the 100 mm and made about 20-30% of the shots with a focal length greater than 70 mm.
I also have to repeat once again that I am very fond of what one with the camera in low light (with the correct settings, and a steady hand) may make what is due to the combination of lens and sensor. Lightning I have been really used only two or three times.

Display
Overall, the display leaves little to be desired, and the touch-screen operation has often proved to be useful. In very bright light and direct sunlight it is with legibility but somewhat difficult. For her compositions, it arrived at the brightest setting (the - can be activated temporarily by pressing a button - very handy) just yet. Reading the many small displays and symbols is then very difficult to nearly impossible.
In general, the symbols for aging eyes are a bit small, especially the (otherwise very useful) electronic level.
The pivotable upwards display is extremely helpful for me it is all the way down a maximum of 50% of the shots. Overhead shots that would require pivoting downward (which is "emulate" the Canon only by complicated and risky on-the-head-Set the camera does), were rare with me.

Operation
Once you get used to the operation (which intensive study of the manual and some exercise requires), it comes with camera of cope quite well. Most of the functions are directly or reach with just a few actions and you can customize some functions to your personal tastes.
A casual user, the functionality and not very intuitive accessibility overwhelm many functions quickly, so it is usually left in the AUTO mode (you need then such a camera?).
The AUTO mode in which there is virtually no possibility of manual intervention are (even exposure compensation via the thumbwheel is ignored here), it does for me in 80% of cases very good. Whether the AUTO mode is doing the right thing, you already recognize many of the small icons that indicate the selected "mode" (eg Portrait, Close-up, Sunset, etc.).
For another 15% of the shots, it does one of the scenes modes (eg Night Scene) or special filters (eg, HDR), the last 5% will only further manual adjustments as you imagine it. Here I use a to my preferences configured P (rogrammautomatik) as C (ustom) mode that can be with AE Lock serve very nice: you can choose the right combination of aperture and shutter speed using the jog dial, the setting for the exposure level and ISO fits.

Handling
Without the glued Flipbac handle on the front of me would be the heavy and smooth camera has often slipped out of your hands (if not held with two hands), with the handle, it is better, but is far from being closer to a really good handle.
No problem with the big wheel around the lens, it has just a little game and therefore does not feel quite as dibasic. Useful is varying depending on the mode a second or even third function of the adjusting wheel, which can be temporarily activated via the touch screen.
The buttons and wheel on the top look good and high quality, but they are not without problems in the operation. The widely projecting mode dial hampered somewhat secure finger grip on the trigger. The Belichtungskorrekturrad underlying is relatively difficult to turn and difficult to read (the info will appear even as thumbnails on the screen), and I turn from time to time in the wrong direction.
The little buttons on the back are quite small and are close together. I have often advised by holding your thumb accidentally hit one of the two upper knobs.
When fits in your pocket, I occasionally caught the button for display or WiFi mode, which is the battery life certainly not very conducive.
Under "That's a No" is striking that the filigree cover the battery / card cover to easily and thus accidentally unlock can be much. If you hang out with the cover open somewhere, that's it probably.

Performance
Slowly the camera is not, but also moves not necessarily in Formula 1. I was a bit disappointed that I had in some situations, the feeling of having to wait a little (autofocus, latency between two shots, and esp. The processing of compute-intensive post-processing steps, for example when shooting at night).

Image Quality
The camera is not intended in any situation perfect, but makes, in my opinion consistently good to very good shots and affords no serious weaknesses. She has my feeling a slight tendency "Blur" to and not 100% accuracy in the automatic white balance. Where you can but if it bothers you, depending on the configuration (eg with respect. AWB, ISO, NR, contrast and shading correction) counteract.
In the macro range has really disappointed me the Canon. You can not make it always (and sometimes not) the object to focus on at least 5 cm object distance at minimum focal length correctly. If it then works out, can the result be described as genuine macro shot because of the small focal length and the still fairly large object distance only with good will.

All in all still a very good and highly recommended camera, because of the large number of minor concessions and the high price but then only 4 instead of 5 stars.
