The mere announcement gave rise to wild speculation: is original member Chris DeGarmo return for the sequel? No, he did not.
Queensrÿche be returning to metal sound of success after their last work rather grungig sounding albums? Well, a little.
And to one to anticipate Operation Mindcrime II is not a flat imitation of OM I. That would have been too easy. Too much has happened in the time, both musically and within the band. CHRIS DeGarmo, who had a huge share in the first part is for years no longer with Queensrÿche. Copy it would be Mike Stone too heavy a task was, therefore, not even trying it.
Of course there are every now and then the parallel guitar lines that have marked the early Queensrÿche sound, but they are rather a musical reminiscence of the first part as an attempt to revive something that there will be in this form again.
Instead, the music has changed. In Operation Mindcrime II there is no SUITE SISTER MARY. The pieces are very compact, have the FREEDOM OUVERTURE offers no comparison to more anarchy-X. The music here reflects very accurately also the essence state of Nikki again, the dismissed after 20 years out of prison, especially the thought of revenge (ONE FOOT IN HELL, HOSTAGE) is driven.
With increasing playing time, but is also more and more confusion to first on the changing world in which he now has to find to right (THE SPEED OF LIGHT, SIGNS SAY GO) and then after the showdown with Dr. X, the question whether he did the right thing (MURDERER), before Nikki in the memory of Sister Mary briefly again find rest (If I Could CHANGE IT ALL). But after that the remorse come more strongly again (An Intentional Confrontation A JUNKIE'S BLUES) and drive him to put an end to his life (FEAR CITY SLIDE) and in his last moments, the tragic hero reminded again of the beautiful events in his life, all are related to his love for Sister Mary.
Musically and lyrically, this is all implemented brilliantly when the anthems like Breaking the Silence, I DO NOT BELIEVE IN LOVE EYES OF A STRANGER or missing, so OM II is surely the best album of Queensrÿche since Promised Land.
The only weak point is the here has often mentioned something half-baked action production of JASON SLATER, the like with transparency as in Operation Mindcrime I Part II could have meant the large recurrence of Queensrÿche. So OM II is a strong album with weak sound that still tells the story of Nikki, Dr. X and Sister Mary worthy end.
Those who have, however, a work of the century as Operation Mindcrime expected, may console themselves that it indeed calendrical are only just under 80 years to return a present.
