The seeds of their success in 1964 at the Lincoln High School in New Jersey, USA placed. The brothers Robert and Ronald Bell found the band called "Jazziacs" together and motivate their classmates George Brown, Claydes Charles Smith (1949-2006) and Dennis Thomas to join. The group plays jazz first, but soon changed to soul music.

After five years of session work and some stylistic reshuffles is called the band from 1969 "Kool & The Gang". Robert Bells nickname "Kool" is namesake. With soulful disco funk climb Kool & The Gang in the 1970s and 1980s regularly the charts. 1979 succeeds the group entitled "Ladies' Night" of great international success. 25 times manage their singles in the Top Ten. On their albums they received 31 gold and platinum awards, and 1985 double platinum for the LP "Emergency". The Brazilian musician and producer Eumir Deodato has contributed significantly to this success.
